My 4850 is performing like a pile of sh#*. Games huck on the lowest of settings (settings that ran perfectly with 8800gts 320)

when I play far cry 2 and even mass effect the game hucks

less graphically challenging games like left 4 dead and devil may cry 4 work muUch better but they looked pretty good with my original gts so i don't really care.

Besides heat is there anything that could be killing the card? I'm thinking more on the software side of things but any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think drivers is a definite option. You probably did this, but just in case, did you uninstall your previous drivers?

Run driver sweeper and clear out your nvidia drivers properly.

What drivers you using? I heard 9.12 is out

sorry im so late to reply (i was kinda away)

but im using 9.10 drivers which I thought would be fine since it is only a 4850

and the 5*** series (or whatever they're called) cards are out.

Reload your system.

Then install vga card with latest drivers.

Uhh I thought I removed my old drivers properly... I even followed this guide

http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_3.html

1. Uninstall any existing graphics drivers. To do this, go to Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs in XP or Control Panel>Programs and Features in Vista. Select the 'Nvidia Drivers' (or similar) item if available and click the Change/Remove or Uninstall button and follow the prompts, rebooting as required. If you happen to have any other graphics drivers left over from previous hardware, such as ATI graphics drivers, uninstall them from here as well. If you have an Nvidia-based motherboard, when uninstalling the Nvidia drivers you will have to specifically select the 'Remove only the following' item, then only select the 'Nvidia Display Drivers' box. If you cannot find any Nvidia display-related entries (e.g. a fresh install of Windows), you are probably using the default Windows graphics drivers, which means you can skip to the New Driver Installation section further below.

but when I ran something on Vista asking to check what's slowing down your PC it mentioned drivers I used with my old 8600gt... so in short Ill try driver sweeper

I also have one quick question... the little "hook" at the back of the graphics card that your motherboard is supposed to clip on is impossible for me to... clip on any way this could affect the cards performance?

you meant to hammer in the graphics card...

Its true!

If it's not hooking properly you probably haven't installed it correctly. Try removing it and plugging it in again

AAaaah scratch that problem last problem, it didn't really matter

Thanks for the proper driver removal advice though... it worked beautifully

Used Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5 (and it works great on 32 bit vista even though it doesn't say so), removed everything to do with nVidia and ATI (to think I was about to downgrade to a 8800gt), reinstalled my ATI drivers aaaaaaaaand WALLAH! okay not wallah, I took a couple of hours to test all my games and thus far WALLAH! they're working great.

One of those moments I live for when working with a PC

I've had issues with the ATI drivers ever since I got Win7 for some reason it refuses to install them properly leaving me with sub-par performance on my old 4850 - why I'm considering going Nvidia next.

If there is still problems just reinstall Windows, I had a similar issue. Reformated and all was well.

hucking? lmmfao

couldn't think of another word... if I say freezing people automatically say "get another card" or "lower the graphics"

i don't wanna sound like a d**s saying the obvious stuff but try something less drastic first... remove old drivers properly, turn the gpu fan speed up (maybe its heat) or maybe you just using the wrong drivers; xp... 64/32 bit... pre windows 7 drivers!

you do have an original copy of windows 7 right?
