Gigs.co.za

They seem legit. I mailed Cybersmart to ask them. Gigs.co.za is a reseller by them

Hi

I can give some feedback on gigs so far.
Unfortunately I haven't been home much so cant give to much detail on speeds etc.

I signed up for the 384 uncapped a few weeks ago.
The service from Hugo has really been great.
The Telkom line installation was done in 4 days and I got my router all setup just over a week after I completed the order forms.
Phoned Hugo and he enabled my account the evening I got the router and started browsing and downloading immediately.

Think I've downloaded about 4 gigs in the couple of days that I've had it so far.
The fair usage policy states that users will be throttled at 20 gigs (I'm not sure to what speed) and cut off at 30. I felt this is very reasonable for an unshaped account at this price.

So far I would definitely recommend the service. Speeds seem decent enough (I will try and get some detailed stats over the weekend) so browsing with 1 download running is possible.
The only other info that I couldn't find on the website was that if you cancel the contract in the 1st 3 months then you have to pay R400 for the router.

Hope this helps.

Throttled? Then they cannot call this unshaped

Cut you off? Then they cannot call this Uncapped

* Sits back and waits patiently for when the consumer act comes into effect

More false advertising, is anybody surprised? I hope the apparent Consumer Protection Act will allow us to screw these liars over. From the looks of it the only people capable of offering a half-decent uncapped account is MWEB. All the rest stumbled into it head first when they were caught with their pants down without the proper research that MWEB clearly did for quite some time.

Until you hit 20 gigs it sure is.

This is the same as any other ISP out there. The only difference is at least now I know when I'm gonna get cut. Its not one of those insane top 50 % of users every x couple of day policies.

I don't think for the price there are allot of other options to get 20 gigs a month at a decent speed, with no setup cost and month to month billing.

Um, no. Other ISPs out there simply lower your speed dramatically, they don't cut it. If they DID cut it and it's advertised as uncapped they will face some legal problems.

Good grief - I would rather go the Mweb, Afrihost and or AXXESS way. Wont trust a little unknown ISP with my business for that matter.

You get what you pay for.

Think you should read this

"Various complainants approached the ASA arguing that the advertisement is misleading as the word “uncapped” implies limitless access, but the service being offered is limited to specific threshold data usage. “Once these thresholds are reached, connection speed is throttled severely,” the complainants said.

Afrihost however said that their uncapped ADSL offering does meet the definition of an “uncapped” service as the user’s connection is never terminated, regardless of usage."

Sorry I don't think I was clear enough in my initial post.
What I meant was that all ISP's have clauses in their terms and conditions to protects themselves (Afrihost says you are not allowed to use download managers and if you do you can be shaped at any point, MWeb has a termination clause in their terms and there are various threads about people being cut) and this is fine as they have every right to.

I just gave feedback on gigs.co.za as I thought it was a very reasonably well priced high usage account and their service was excellent.

I will post some more feedback once I have more time to do proper test.

Yes, MWEB states in their T&C's that your connection can possibly be terminated if you violate the T&C, like for ex. bypassing their shaping.

Mweb, however will not terminate your connection due to amount of bandwidth consumed because this voids the meaning of the word uncapped.

Also, seeing as how Gigs's package is unshaped as well, how can it be throttled over a certain threshold?

Also, now you know why people are leaving Afrihost :)

PC Format Live gives you 30GB for R300, which still costs less than their 384k "uncapped", and runs at any line speed.

Seeing that's this is effectively a 30GB capped account (and not uncapped), why would you want it anyway when there are better 30GB accounts out there that aren't limited to your line speed.

That's not a bad price at all. It doesn't include the router or ADSL line though so it definitely isn't cheaper.
I when i ever upgrade from 384 I will definitely move to a high usage capped account. For now this was the cheapest way to get connected to the internet with decent usage.

ive got a member of the family using a Telkom email account, if i switch ISP's is there any way she can keep it?

Go to any Telkom Direct Store or w/e and ask them to cancel your account. But tell them you want to keep your Email Adress. They should ask you to fill out a form etc. Then you will be able to get your email exaclty how you do now (maybe a few setting changes in Outlook 07 but i dont think so) or you can access it via:

mail.telkomsa.net - which is very similar to gmail but works on local cap, and seems to have alot more features and things w/e i dont mind. It should cost like R15 - R50 pm
BUT
I do reccomend that in the future your dont register your email adress with your ISP directly as it becomes a case just like this.
rather use:

gmail eg. [email protected]
Yahoo eg. [email protected]
Windows Live Hotmail eg. [email protected]

they are all top notch services, that are all free, offer great stuff etc. I know that gmail gives you like 100GB of email storage :) doubt anyone would ever use it though..

Gmail--offers up to 7.5GB (and increasing) not 100GB; unless you buy more space (either part of Google Apps or stand alone).
OTOH, Windows Live Hotmail offers dynamic unlimited space (or up to 25GB, after this it will prompt you to delete mail to keep size acceptable)
OTOOH, Yahoo is truly unlimited (no restrictions) and so is AOL Mail.

If you want professional mail service go for Gmail. It is slick and very efficient.

...resellers of a company mentioned - good throughput (damn side better than MWEB) – no need to be alarmed – brilliant offering – take it!
