After much frustration with Paint Shop Pro, I installed the new version of GIMP.

The only problem is that the window management seems either broken or idiotic.

It creates 3 buttons on the taskbar (Main, toolbox, and another one). And I can't get the toolbox to dock/stay on top. It makes the whole thing a major hassle and basically useless because everything keeps disappear.

The release docs acknowledge that the window hit thing under preferences doesn't work under Windows. Thats OK...but there has to be a way to make this useable without a 3rd party that keeps the windows on top.

Most of the documentation/info online is "It works fine on my linux...whats your problem".

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks for the info evilstebunny.:) I tried the plugin you suggested....seems to work only with the portable one.

Tried some other plug-ins too....all don't work as promised and/or crash.

I just don't get what they were thinking when they designed this. Everything has a docking bar...except the one place where one needs it: The main window.

Time to cut my losses and let it be...

Have you ever used Corel PhotoImpact X3?

It's the old Ulead PhotoImpact that was bought and revamped by Corel, I've used it in the past and absolutely love it. For quick touch ups and even general cloning or scanning, it's a brilliant app.

Works with Xp and Vista ;)

Haven't heard of it. But I think I'm just going to install that *other* photo editing app....I've got it here somewhere. I was kinda hoping that I could switch to a GNU one tough...:o

Take my word for it. Give the program I mentioned a shot, play with it for a day and come back and tell me you hate it. It's really that good. Not as advanced as Photoshop and not as basic as Paint or Gimp.

There really is only one. :o

Once you learn Photoshop you'll never use any other  :D

The learning curve is too steep for someone like me. I've used PhotoImpact since version 6, version 13 = X3, so I'm quite used to it by now.

And some of the features I've heard about in the latest version - wow.

I've heard that CS4 has been released, though I haven't had time to read up on it :o

*heads off in search of feature list* :D

It is quite a steep learning curve, took me a long time to get used to it :o

I believe you...its just that if I am going to learn something new then it might as well be something that is either GNU or state-of-the-art.

There really is only one. :o
I know...but I figured a bit of vagueness might be a good idea here. Pricetag and all that.

Like what? The only thing I heard about is x64...on PCs only.:p:p:p

GIMP looks like something worth learning....but the windows implementation is 100% FUBAR.
