GIMP to be removed from Ubuntu?

Okay, I have to ask, WHAT THE HECK?!!!

This could be an outstanding news by its significance. The next version of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx or Ubuntu 10.04) won’t include GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) by default due to its user interface that is too complex…

They can use photoshop on Windows and Mac but Ubuntu users are too stupid to use Gimp????

Okay, let me explain why I WTH'ed.

Neither is all the extras you get default with an Ubuntu install! So now we measure ourselves against Windows to see what we should include and leave out? Why not then just give the person a blank desktop and let him decide what he wants then, just like Windows. O right, that will not be Ubuntu user friendly...

The main reason I would have kept it is to promote FOSS, look, you have to pay $$$ for photoshop, here we have something similar for FREE.

Mark my words, in a couple of seasons Gimp is going to be removed from the main repos to launchpad and few people will maintain the Ubuntu Gimp package.

This is only the first step of dumbing down Ubuntu and its users, there is a motions to remove F-Spot as well since you cannot view photos in F-Spot, you have to import them to be edited.

Sanity prevailed and they kept F-Spot for the next release, but it too is treading thin ice.
 
Gimp is not included by default in Kubuntu either. I doubt whether it will be removed from the repositories though.

As far as I can understand, while it won't come with Ubuntu by default, it will still be available in the repos.

I think the deciding factor should be: how many Ubuntu users actually use Gimp on a regular basis?
I'm a big fan of Gimp, but don't see the sense in including it if only, say, 20% of Ubuntu users actually use it, while the others are perfectly happy with something very basic and lightweight.
 
No space left on a future Live CD me thinks, and most users don't use it anyway so it's inevitable.

Windows ship with Paint which contrary to popular belief, is quite useful in the latest incarnations of Windows. What is Linux/Ubuntu shipping as 'lightweight' if they don't ship GIMP ?

I've also found GIMP not exactly great to use, its interface is very cluttered with multiple lose windows and such. So i don't really care if it's there "by default", but then i assume there IS a "MS Paint" requivalent by default at least?

Also GIMP is actually pretty small compared to Photoshop. We're not talking 200MB+ , more like what, 10MB ?
 
For KDE there is Kolour Paint, for Gnome there is Gthumb or F-Spot, not quite MS Paint, more basic photo editing.
