Gingrich promises US moon colony by 2020

Fcck yeah. If part of the deal was him putting his cock on a block against it actually happening and I was a yank I'd probably vote for him and hold my breath on abortion issues. :o

abortion is in any case a state issue, regardless of what the republican rhetoric has to say about it.

Please. With the extreme retardation and self-centeredness prevalent in modern society there is no way the human race can colonise another celestial body, even our own moon. Imagine if you will: (You probably won't because I'm on everyone's ignore list)

If they built a colony on the moon tomorrow, Apple would sue everyone "because they invented" heat tiles, solar panels, and some component in the oxygen supply tanks, (the fact that they have existed for decades notwithstanding), some left-wing, PC, libertard organisation would launch a massive protest (I'm going out on a limb here and saying they'll be from southern California and/or Cape Town) and complain about the astronauts not eating vegan-only nutrition tablets prepared from the seeds of a fruit growing in a certain valley in north-western Kampuchea, and a company with a "funky" 800x600 designed website will be selling us Hydrogen Kool Kredits to "offset the astronauts' Hydrogen Footprints" as they travel through the vacuum of space. Special interest groups would bitch about there not being a certain percentage of each phenotype of humanity, each gender, each religion and each preference for a certain colour of Astros on board, defined as a percentage of the particular sample of humanity they painstakingly took to match whatever their agenda might be, and denounce the mission as racist/sexist/speciest/genusist/phylumist/whatever is applicable. As soon as the landing took place, the angry emails and Facebook comments would start pouring in about the team not using enough native materials and labour, regardless of the plain facts staring them in the face, namely there being none.

Eventually, as soon as the colony was self-sustaining and people from the earth had a safe, efficient, cheap way of getting there, it would be flooded with those who care nothing for the values, principles, history, or even lives of those who made it possible, and only came for the promises of easy money. They would breed more and eventually due to the system of unqualified democracy, be in charge of the new Luna/Mars/Triton society, lead it down into dumb****ery, and those who survived would beg for a new place to settle, only to repeat the same process over and over again.

The big difference today is that there isn't a lot of support for research and development for its own sake.

I'd vote for him if I thought he could pull it off.
He wouldn't and couldn't.

Scaled back by increasing it by around a further 2 billion according to wikipedia?
A mere $2 billion? Actually the budget today is half what it was in the 60s, so yes, significantly scaled back. It was those huge amounts of money that made what they did back then possible. Along with a different kind of mindset that didn't care about a pay-off or what the tangible benefits would be.

How does he propose paying for this? It can't be by raising taxes.
Republican fairy dust.

If they were to do the work to go back they'd have to come up with some ultimate benefit because these leaders no longer inspire people, they're no longer capable of convincing people that something should be done just because.

I'd vote for him if I thought he could pull it off. If as much effort went into space exploration as has gone into war in the last 50 years mankind would be a lot better off as a species. Scientific innovation and invention is the way forward.

As long as it sets them on the right track with the goal of colonising the moon instead of the aimless mess NASA currently finds itself in.

Well said. They need another Reagan to inspire confidence, ingenuity and personal responsibility. Not the envious entitlement and victimhood crap sold by the snake oil salesman currently in the WH

Didn't America just retire their space shuttles? It going to take just that long to get a working prototype for their next shuttle program.

Then too bad all they have is the Fantastic Philandering Pillsbury Doughboy.

The plan to retire the space shuttle came about in large part because they were busy designing and building a far better replacement vehicle with the goal of going back to the moon and then on to mars. Under bush, all this stuff was being done.

If there is a good bit of news, its that nasa is now giving money to space x who are designing a few interesting vehicles. Space travel is about to get a lot cheaper. Going to the moon will happen quite quickly.

They don't. I read recently that 27% of Americans identify as Republicans and 31% as Democrats. Everyone else is completely sick of these clowns.

What's really incredible is that this party apparently cannot field one decent candidate for this upcoming election.

There's every country that can stop them.

I would argue Ron Paul is a decent candidate. However the mainstream establishment on both sides, fear him and what he stands (Gasp! Peace, pro-rights/constitution etc.) and thus shun him (You should see how "Liberal" and "Reight-wing" media both almost refuse to mention his name at all.) And he is out of touch with what the mainstream GOP has become, a bunch of hypocritical nutty neocons. (Its good that he is out of touch with them...)

Newt and other American politicians:
"they mostly come at night...mostly."

There aren't really many actual liberal news sources. The media seems to mostly be people who oppose freedom. The so-called left and right leaning outlets differ only in exactly what aspects of freedom they want to demolish first and perhaps their preferred means of achieving that goal.

The Space Shuttle was long overdue for retirement. They should have replaced it, but the days of large amounts of cash were long past.

Reagan hated personal responsibility and the freedoms for which the US is supposed to stand, and a charlatan like him would struggle today to inspire people.

Yeah, build a lunar colony in 8 yrs and they don't even have a heavy lift launch vehicle, bwahahaha...

......
Ultimately, its not so much about space, its about attitude. Things can get done and the economy fixed if the US get some fight back in them. The bully is eating their lunch.

Got completely stuck inside the IsraHelL colon and no force in the universe could get them out of there.

Simple, as simple as possible is what they will need.

They should take the design of the Russian Soyuz, and just make it with better materials.

Well thats what they are essentially doing by going back to a simple rocket design.

Space X is quite far along. Not bad for an ex south african who matriculated from Pretoria Boys high. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk

I hope Gingrich will be elected as the next US President. When that happens, USA will be economically finished

Dream on, Kitty09. I'm not a Gingrich fan by any stretch, but the surest way to damage the American economy is another four years of Obama. He's done more damage than all the POTUSs of history combined. You should be praying for an Obama second term.

Don't you skeptics read the news? Both the Russians and the Chinese are planning moon bases.

What's driving this is not just national glory and prestige but Helium 3.

Helium 3?

Artemis Project.

Seriously, you should check out the Helium 3 idea. It's what's driving the USA, Russia and China back to the moon. This time it's all about business.

Even anybody-edits Wikipedia has articles on moon-sourced H3 as fuel: Helium 3.
Discovery News.

Newt's moon base idea is not daft. Which is why the Russkies and Chings are planning the same, ie mine Helium 3 on moon. Check the links.

I'm astonished people haven't latched on to this yet.
