Giving notice when emigrating

Hey folks, been a while.

I was hoping to find advice on the topic. I'm busy with the visa application process to emigrate to Norway after receiving a job offer and accepting.

They would like me to start as soon as my visa is approved, but at the latest end of October (which my contract states). We're obviously very excited and would like to also start as soon as the visa is approved, having prepared for this and will be crashing at family with only our suit cases and a sense of starting over from scratch :)

Work has known my intention to emigrate for a few years now, as I've been talking about it on and off for a bit. But now things are more solidified and on it's way (medicals done and police clearance almost with us in the next 2 weeks), I was wondering if I should give 2 months notice, with the option of leaving earlier if the visa is approved before the end of September, or if I should just give 1 calendar's month notice in September?

As far as I know there is no animosity or ill-feelings in my current company, so don't expect any push-back, and I do feel I'd be doing them a favor by letting them know well in advance so they have time to look for a replacement, however, what's your experience with something like this? What would you do in my situation? Any advice?

When I emigrated to the UK I gave 30 days notice. Was also going to give notice early but then I didn't know how long the visa would take.

I'd just give 30 days notice.
There is a difference between 30 days notice and 1 calendar month. That's why I was wondering, since the 1st is around the corner and all. Thanks for the advice :)
 
When one of my colleagues emigrated, he just gave notice early and told them that he would work until his visa was approved, so no one knew the exact date. Started doing the handover/knowledge transfer early, so by the time the visa was approved, he was ready to go - just a couple of days to do the exit interview and farewells.

That is the more amicable thing to do. It gives the company time to find a new person and the ability to have a smoother handover.

So much this.

I'm in a similar situation but I'm only leaving some time next year and already the company is aware and can plan for when I do leave.

This would be what I aimed for if the company is amenable to it as you don't know if there will be delays on the Visa side and you don't want to be caught out.

Company would need to be really good about it depending on your work as if you could leave at any time its hard to assign biggish items to you. You would have to work helping others doing their work for most of that period and handing over.
 
Don't mean to derail this thread but Norway is an interesting option. May I ask if you were purposely looking to go there or is it a case of you just want out ?

There is a difference yes, a calendar months notice is from the first of the month to the end of the month. So if you resign the 12th you only can leave at the end of the following month, if you've got 30 days notice and you resign on the 12th you can leave 30 days later.

we already have family there and prefer a more Europe vibe than the go-to Australian one. More places to see and travel to without having to take weeks off.

Thanks for the advice here guys, reckon I'll give notice on the first with the condition on the visa being approved :)
 
Thanks again guys, the medicals didn't go too smoothly. I had a kidney stone last year which might be of concern. So I decided not "to show my hand too soon" in case I am denied entry based on that.
