Glen Vista High School fire(?)

Yes, the story is true. I went to Glenvista and still live close by.

Grade 10 pupils were ''protesting'' writing prelim exams, and as you do in SA, you burn and destroy things when ''protesting''. The real kicker is that it was a Life Orientation exam to be written. The ''protest'' was a success as now the prelims have been postponed.

The guilty students have been identified.

Yep, the school is shot.

I'm under no illusion that it was ever one of Jo'burg's finest, but for a public high school it was one of the better ones in the south. It has gradually gone to hell in the last few years though.

This is why we had corporal punishment which meant if you tried a stunt like this you'd face dire consequences among which would mean a caning from, not the principal, but the SAPS. And nobody wanted that.

Maar nou het julle mos mEnSe rEgTe.

That, and the fact that now the race card would be played with the curtains still ablaze.

We are not paying for Glenvista High fire damage, says Lesufi

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on Tuesday said his department would not pay for refurbishment of the Glenvista High School hall which was allegedly set alight by pupils.

“We are devastated to discover pupils could go as far as committing an act of arson, destroying school infrastructure in the process, to escape an important assessment. We will not fix the damage caused by the fire,” Lesufi said after a visit to the school.

One grade 12 pupil, said the situation was devastating, especially because it was their last year. “We now had to write our exam outside. It was difficult as there were many distractions, it was hot and exhausting,” she said.

Another pupil, said it was exhausting to write outside in the heat. “It's very disappointing and scary to see what kids [pupils] our age are capable of doing. It puts a very bad image on Glenvista,” she said.

An estimated R400,000 worth of damage was done to the school hall.
