gmail - new mail notification

gmail had there own notifier - then removed it

then there was notifr - which suddenly from freeware became something to pay to use with mavericks

is there any other alternative ?

I leave a tab open all day, with Gmail running. When I receive an email, the tab flashes.

the great thing about gmail notifier & notifr, were they were standalone - not browser related
