I am trying to access my gmail pop3 server through my SE K700i .
It gets as far as saying 'server found' but then just hangs.

Don't know where the problem is - the settings should be correct, I use it from my pc without problems.

Anyone else have success with gmail on their cell phones?

Yes, I am using those settings, and various combinations of them as well ;)
Nothing seems to work. I'm beginning to think that it has something to do with SSL and my phone, but I haven't found another pop3 server that uses SSL so I can test it.

Normal pop3 and imap works quite well.

ive never been able to access gmail either thru mtn pop... until i found this, try this its great... www.gmailwireless.com

ps its 3rd party not gmail but works the bomb...

If you download directly to your phone, you need to specify in the account settings to use SSL for both sending and receiving. Not sure how the SE K700i operates, but on my Nokia 9500 it works. On some phones you might need to force the port numbers, although it shouldn't be necessary as gmail uses the standard port numbers: pop.gmail.com:995 and smtp.gmail.com:465

Obviously, if you use just use the phone as a modem, your normal e-mail client will operate as usual.

On my 6630 it helped when I used the IP addresses of the the Gmail servers instead of the domain names:

Outgoing Mail Server : 64.233.185.109
Incoming Mail Server : 64.233.185.109

This was in the Nokia messaging app. I prefer to use ProfiMail, which does not allow the use of IP addresses in account configuration, so I am using mail.mtn.co.za as my outgoing mail server.

Same problem

On my 6630 using gmail, I got to the same point. It connects, but there's never mail.

Sending is no problem though.

I use the 6630 mostly as modem, so never really went to any trouble trying to get its e-mail setup right.

Guess it would be nice to receive email while on the go, but I've no real need for it yet. I will try the IP adresses tonight though.

Otherwise, Gmail rules! :)

Why not register for gmailwireless? Does the same thing....

Hi sparklehorse,

I have been wondering why my E1000 could never get the test emails I sent to my GMail account. Thanks to IC's last post I realised that I was sending from my GMail account to myself as a test and that GMail won't let these messages download.

I have no problem sending email through GMail's SMTP server through the E1000. It works pretty well (once I got the port right). I have to use port 587 and not 465.

Regards

Thanks for the replies - it looks like it's a problem with the phone. Some other people with the same phone also reported problems with gmail. SE says it's a problem with gmail and gmail says it's a problem with SE, so I don't think the issue will be resolved soon ;)

I'm forwarding my messages to my isp acount and that seems to work fine on my K700i.

Another tip for mtn users: I have a few gmail forwarding rules to <mycellnr>@mtnice.co.za , so I get an sms if I receive an email ;)
