Yes, they started out as a webmail service back before Google went global with the Gmail. So technically they have the right to the name in this country. There was a similar situation in Germany where gmail is called googlemail. It will probably come down to a court case or a buyout.

No, its on the fibre backbone in SA, which means better latency or something. Not fibre optic cable to your home, unfortunately not... :(

Oh wow that's pretty cool. I was just checking out what's at gmail.co.za and thought it was some sort of dodgy ISP...
