hi guys

gmails new alternative to pop3, imap is operational now. busy trying to
set it up on my p990 and iphone. but having trouble with SSL settings

can we use SSL on mtn network? i vaguely remember something about this long ago but cant find anything when i search

Just to add my thoughts, this is a truly fantastic service, especially when you consider its free. Works excellently on my P990. For those who can't get it, you have to change your language to English (us).

Sorry for being stupid, Whats the difference between imap and pop3? (If i dont ask ill never know)

pop3 is basically one direction, mail arrives in your account and is then sent to other device, imap is two direction, so anything for example i do in my iphone email happens in my gmail too... flippen amazing

and you must try google apps too, also free, lets you run your gmail thru your domain name... wow

imap is cool but not when you consider the limited data usage that the average south african broadband user is limited by. every action that you do via an imap connection uses up data and its not practical for data conscious users unless you really need constant synchronisation.

i'll use my pop3 for now thank you until uncapped data becomes a reality in SA!

I haven't really noticed much/any difference on my side.

lol, i use gigs a month so not stressed about a bit of mail data, but then yes i agree there are those that it would affect. but then again its the same as surfing the net, thats traffic both ways

After using IMAP for the past few days, it seems to use the same amount of data as POP, remember that most phones allow you to limit the downloaded e-mails to a particular size, I really can't see any difference in the data used, remember that if there are no no e-mails then the IMAP sync uses a few KB at best.

Ok guys, I have been using POP3 since time immemorial. Its great, though sometimes its full of ****. Recently I've been getting some wired messages when I try to Send/Receive on my TyTN. When it finally did, it deleted all my mails!!!

I thnk its time now to move to IMAP. If only I knew how to. Any assistance?

Thanks

Ok, got them:

To configure IMAP for your Windows Mobile 6 device, just follow these steps:

Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
Open the Start menu and select 'Programs' > 'Messaging' > 'New E-mail Account.'
Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field.
Uncheck the box to get settings automatically from the Internet and select 'Next.'
Select 'Internet e-mail' as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.
Enter a descriptive name for the email account and select 'Next.'
Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Mail Server field.
Select 'IMAP4' as the Account type from the drop-down menu and select 'Next.'
Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') and password.
Select 'Next.'
Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server field.
Make sure that the 'Outgoing server requires authentication' box is checked.
Select the 'Advanced Server Settings' link.
Make sure that the 'Require SSL' box is checked for both incoming and outgoing emails.
Select 'The Internet' as the network connection from the drop-down menu.
Select 'Done' and then 'Next.'
Select how often you want your phone to send/receive emails from the drop-down menu.
For more download options, select the 'Review all download settings' link.

That’s not getting it to work really. POP will just download the emails to the phone. Get imap fixed rather.

Can you give some more info on this please.....

http://www.google.com/a/org/?hl=en

What you do is you change your domain's MX from your web host’s mail server to Google's mail server. Now Google handles your email!

:D
