I didn't know this as well, and yes, some of them actually look like it might just make Gnome 3 bearable.

jah--there is not real GUI tool to make themes install directly--need some hacking. A PITA I agree. It is even worse in Ubuntu Unity; no gnome-tweak-tool provided by default.
