Hoesit All,
A week or two ago i tried out gnome 3 on F15 live, then on my F14 installing gnome shell, i guess i will have to get use to it in the future.

Last night, i tried out KDE 4, euw, sies man, what a horror.

At the moment I prefer gnome 2.x anyday, simple clean, neat and themed out to the max...

I dislike both unity and gnome3, I am disappointed in the direction that they are taking, it is because of gnome 3 and unity that I have made a permanent switch to KDE. KDE is really beautiful, you just need to find the right distro to run it with. (Had some issues with kubuntu and linux mint 10 kde but OpenSuse works just fine)

i am surprised to see this mood against unity

Well, as I read somewhere - the idea behind Unity is not to convert the converted, but he unconverted. Basically, the point that the guy was trying to make is that for the most part, Ubuntu users will stick with what they already know and like. Its those looking to make the transition into Linux from one of the other OS's, that Unity will be developed for. Which makes somewhat sense, when you look at the reasons behind all of it.

I think the idea in this thread, is the asking of the opinion of the already converted - which may be why there is more negative feedback than one would normally think...

Not a stupid question :) ... Basically, you're right - Ubuntu does currently ship with Gnome 2 as the default. As of the next release (due towards the latter half of April), Ubuntu has switched desktop environments to Unity, chucking out Gnome as the default GUI.

Which was where my comment was headed - if Unity becomes the default, then it will be installed on any upgrade / new install. Meaning that if its not wanted, the user is required to complete the process of uninstalling Unity, and installing GUI of choice...

Dude that's a noob statement, you are misleading OP. Natty will ship with Unity 3D by default, but if the GPU cannot handle it then the user will be presented with Ubuntu Classic desktop(a.k.a Gnome2). Also at login you have a choice of what environment you wanna log into. Basically, if you don't want Unity, you don't have to install any other Desktop environment, gnome2 is there. But even if you choose to install Gnome3, KDE etc. You don't have to Uninstall Unity, you can have many desktop environments, that's the beauty of Linux.

Att: OP, next time you want to find out anything about Ubuntu then take a look at www.omgubuntu.co.uk
See how Unity has come thus far

I read OMGubuntu's articles all the time. This post wasn't intended to get facts, I wanted to know what people thought of the two new desktop environments that are going to shape the mainstream distros in the coming months.

Sorry if this is a stupid question (but 2 years into Ubuntu and I still feel like a noob); but doesn't Ubuntu ship with Gnome as the default interface? Or am I missing something?

Ubuntu is still a Gnome distro, so even though it isnt using Gnome Shell in its upcoming version, it uses a lot of Gnome software. But yes, in prior versions Gnome 2 was the default UI, this is not so anymore.

instead of reinventing(and somewhat improving) the wheel they should of just officially supported/developed Enlightenment, and pretty much blown everyone out of the water in terms of desktop awesomeness

One of the main reasons they went Unity, according to Mark, was because OEM vendors preferred this over Gnome and any other shell/manager.
Shuttleworth hopes -- expects, really -- that this switchover will be completed by the next release. "Lots of people are already committed to Unity -- the community, desktop users, developers, and platform and hardware vendors." In particular, he noted, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) favor Unity. They're happy to ship it.

In an interview after the presentation, Shuttleworth added that Dell, which he said had sold several million Ubuntu desktops, laptops, and netbooks, supports the project. In addition, Canonical has overarching deals in place with Lenovo and Acer. These arrangements may lead to these major PC OEMs releasing Ubuntu desktops as well.

One reason Shuttleworth cited for this switch is that that using one interface for both netbooks and desktops will improve quality assurance and make it easier for OEMs to integrate and support Ubuntu across their PC platforms. In short, "There will be no fault-line for OEMs between desktops."

So, last night I installed the 11.04 Beta and gave unity a bash.

On my netbook it's basically unusable, very slow :( so I've gone back to classic gnome.

On the desktop PC I installed it, it wasn't bad. Very pretty, and it seemed to work allright in the short time I used it.
