Gobii IVP

My Galaxy Nexus had a cracked screen and was quoted at R2000 to fix it so I bought the IVP instead.

The on paper spec looked very decent and EWN report confirmed my initial thoughts on the phone. But what I liked most visually was the more rectangular shape versus very curved edges.

Initially impressions, and this is the first full day with the phone, are very good. It's quick, responsive, the screen and camera are fine, never expect it to be cutting edge. But I do consider myself a power user, and will be very keen to see how it handles being pushed quite hard. Very interesting thing I notice is that G+ is not compatible with the device, so no Google Photos, and I can't sync all my images back. Think I'll sit the weekend and root the phone and take it from there.

But if anyone has doubts about the phone, the build quality is by no means cheap, it's chunky and solid without being heavy and it is very speedy.

Anyone else playing with one?

Just got my IVP phone today and so far quite happy with it.

As a warning to you and anyone thinking of using Kingo to root your phone, D O N T ! ! !

It does seem to root MTK phones but my last MTK6577 based tablet phone kept crashing and freezing afterwards. According to reports on various forums it collects the IMEI and who knows what else from your phone and sends it off to a server in China. It then seems to download something which it uploads to your phone. Stay away.

I'll be using SP Flash tool and MTKDroid tools to root mine............hopefully.

Let us know how you get on.

@cent and need some expert guidance

Hi, I had the IVP for some while now. I have a S4 and a S5. Bought the Gobii ivp to test it out. In all honesty it is a marvelous phone. It's responsive and very nicely build.

At R1700, yes it is not a S5, but if you want the full android lifestyle without spitting out R6k+ I really suggest this little animal. :)

Hehe that is just my 2cents.

My real question is. I want to root the Gobii IVP, but I have no idea how to go about this since it's not a known brand with published methods/tutorials yet.

Can someone please give me some advice how to go about this?

I really vouch for this phone. The battery life isn't actually all that bad. I go a full work day with it. Obviously if you play games or use play store for hours on end you can expect a short battery life. I am however really impressed overall.

I just want to do some other benchmarks, but really require to root it. But I need guidance.

When I have done it I'll post a report here. :erm:

It seems the gobii people disabled the move to sd card option in the rom, one of the reasons why i want to root.

Ok, so

1. I have made a backup of the ROM using SP Flash Tool
2. Created a CMW recovery image using MTKDroidTools
3. ..... don't have the courage yet to flash the new recovery image.

I think I am going to enjoy the phone for a few days before I possibly turn it into an ornament.

If anyone else is interested this is the way I have found to root this phone.

This method WILL void your warranty though, be warned.

As per my previous post for anyone else following this thread, another warning, DON"T be tempted to use Kingo to root your phone.
Search google for info about this tool. It's nasty.

I'm so scared now i wish superoneclick supported this device. I dont want to loose this precious gem

Has anybody noticed that this phone has specs very similar to the Moto G.The Moto G has a better screen but the gobi has a sd card slot.

A friend of mine has ordered this and started to become slightly worried about the battery life comments and has been trying to look around for where to get a spare battery, do you think it's worth/required(@anyone who has one)?

Like i said earlier the battery life isn't that bad.

A extra battery is always nice, but not sure if kalahari sell them separately?

To those that already have this phone.

How well does the GPS function on this device? Does it find your location quickly and does Google Maps do a good job of getting you from A to B with accuracy?

Secondly, the camera. Does it do a good job of taking 5MP photos? Daylight/Low light conditions, etc..

Lastly, with the Dual Sim. When you have a dedicated 3G data SIM in one of the slots, do you find that calls are missed/dropped with your primary "Voice" SIM? The reason I ask is, I suspect the SIM's share an aerial within the device and when the one SIM is working (i.e. sending Data or on a Call, not idle), the other SIM goes off network.

Cheers
Will
