i am going to be in johannesburg in the first week on january and was thinking of going to the theme park at gold reef city. is it worth it?

are the rides good?
how busy is it likely to be - will there be long queues?
what is the value for money proposition like (at R165/ticket)?
are there decent food options inside and are they reasonably priced?
do i have to pay the full R250 for the heritage tour if i have a theme park ticket already? is this tour worth it?

i will be there with my wife - we are both active adults who enjoy the outdoors and exciting activities.

Can't remember the cost, but was worth the money.

The rides are good and there are reasonably priced places to eat.

Queues are unpredictable, but I know on public holidays and weekends it gets quite full i.e. wait for 0.5-1 Hour for the big rides e.g. Anaconda.
 
Rides are included in the price of entry so you don't have to pay for each one. They're good.
 
Rides are good.... IF they are open.

We have been a few times and enjoyed it every time. Obviously disappointed when certain rides are closed.
 
During the school holidays it can be extremely full, e.g. bus loads being brought in for the day. you could possibly wait an hour or 2 for just 1 ride, then get lunch eating places are good. then maybe get in another ride or 2, so essentially you'll be paying R165 for 2 rides, which is a possibility.

Overall excellent place though if its not that full, you'll have a blast.

In January? Is Joburg all on the beach over said time?
 
Absolutely, the rides are incredible- international standard, but if you go in the holidays you can end up in long queues. I went on a saturday once and stood in the queue for the anaconda for 2.15 hours. During the holidays though the queues should be a lot shorter because the days are more spread out- you may wait 20 minutes for some of the more popular rides.
There are a lot of food stalls including franchises like anats, etc and you can also get hotdogs and burgers for the going price- R30 or whatever.

yeah they said JHB cmes to a standstill in Dec/jan. Not a chance. Last year was the first time in about 15 years that I was at home for the holidays and I have never seen it that busy. Went to carnival city and waited 20 minutes just to get into the parking lot.
 
i was thinking of going on monday 6th jan. some of the parents will be back at work already. hope it is not too packed...

any feedback on the heritage tour?

I think patents only go back to work after schools reopen. But if you go on a weekday it shouldn't be too bad.
 
Ferris wheel was down for a refurbishment but had been re-installed - went past this morning and looks rather good :-)
 
Half the times, the rides aren't working. Which is another issue on its own lol. But if you lucky enough, to go on the right day you could have a pretty good time. So really its luck of the draw. But in terms of pricing they vary.

Quite a hectic price for a family.
 
It ridiculous in all honesty haha. I think it probably causes not as many people are going anymore, so they trying to recuperate costs.
-personally, I think its worth the one time experience, after that not. The Ratanga Junction theme park in Cape Town is closing, and I see Golf Reef city theme park not being far behind.
But that's just my 2 cents lol

But while we here get a Tsogo sun Hotel or Gambling card its free - they have discounts even on the basic one

Persons under 1.3m

That does include all rides. Also included is a few things like putt-putt/Lazer tag etc. You also get a free lunch and drink at various places costing around R100
All rides was open and working(as far as I could tell, well at least all the major ones)
Cues not too bad, never stood more than 10min at a ride. Except for those two relative stupid ones. The log and runaway train. Geez probably stood an hour in cue at that log. Think it was pure incompetence as there was only three logs going down.

What did amaze me was the quality and price of food stuff. I mean one would expect everything to be very expensive inside Gold Reef city. But I was surprised. Everything mostly normal prices.

We ate with our free meal included in ticket at a place called Oldees Diner.
R105 for a pretty good and big cheese burger with chips and cooldrink/draught. Also great pizzas for R100 and less including drink.

Yeah pricing isn't to bad considering, was there in October, did that deal as well and also stood ages for the first 2 rides.
