Hi guys.

Just a little question for discussion. Should penalties and direct freekicks be included in the total when calculating the award for golden boot of the season?

Does anybody know how many goals C.Ronaldo has scored from penalties and direct freekicks in the league so far?

why not ? they qualify as goals.

True that, though i somehow get a sour taste wen a goal isnt scored from open play, it almost seems unfair:p

thats also true, however, i feel if that should the freekick or penalty be awarded as part of the final total, then it should be the person that gained & converted the freekic/penalty tat should get it added to his total.

For example, if the striker is fouled in the box, and the striker tats fouled scores the penalty then he should be credited wit tat goal as part of the final total. However, if a striker is fouled, and up steps a defender to take it, it jus doesnt seem fair. Because there could be a hypothetical situation whereby a team could get a penalty every game and their defender becomes the top scorer of the season merely because he scored a penalty tat was earned by someone else.
 
dude a free kick is awarded from open play because someone may have scored

ronaldo has been united top goal scorer this season so why should they not allow it

free kick, i think the free kicks he has scored have been awesome and would be totally offensive if ruled anything but great

scoring a penalty is not that easy to be honest

peerie the chances of a team getting a penalty ever game is near impossible

also i would not want a defender taking penalties to be honest

You an arsenal supporter?I always here g00ners supporters bitching about cronaldos goal tally. "he takes all the free kicks and penalties"

So what?!Im no manu supporter but ronaldo is class,if u put the ball in the back of the net its a goal

Im sure il hear some Ars supporters go on about how adebayor scored more goals in open play and that ronaldo should be classified as a striker...;)

Arsenal seem to score lots of lucky goals from corners.p****s me off,but kudos to them all the same

Torres has 4 goals less in his first season in the Prem. Oh and he had to put up with Kuyt and Voronin as strike partners for most of the games :D

yea maybe goals from corners should not be given either because headering a ball from a corner is not really open play its a set piece

infact lets not award any goals when ppl score lets just put it down as bolton scored hahaha

Indirect freekicks are scored from open play, not direct freekicks. I totally agree wit wat u said about his freekicks...f'in amazin!!

Granted gettin a penalty every game is near IMPROBABLE. About not wanting a defender to take penalties, i do recall in Man Uniteds 90's heydays a certain Dennis Irwin was the designated penalty taker. Its more about confidence and knowing how to place the ball in the back of the net.

No im not takin anythin away from ronaldo, i think he is awesome and a joy to watch wen he isnt marked outta the game wen versin big sides.;) I just thought i'd ask the question cause i was havin a debate wit my mates about it and wanted to get other peoples view points:D

Personally, i still think only penalties/freekicks earned AND converted by the same player should be accreditted to the total goals scored for the golden boot, if not, then shouldnt the person who earns a penalty/freekick but doesnt take it be awarded wit an assist due to the fact tat a goal came off it?

Erm..actually it is open play, cause unless the corner taker scored directly wit kickin the ball into the net, play would have been active.

I agree

Anyway the ball ends up in the net should go towards golden boots,only haters think otherwise.Its like saying only strikers should qualify for golden boot
 
if you had to do a statistical analysis of freekicks at goal, I'm sure you would find that it is a ridiculously low number that is converted into goals. so there's no reason why they should not count against the scorer no matter who earned the free kick.

on the penalty front you might have a bit more backing. but the player still has to have the mental edge to take the penalty and make it count for his team who is chasing for major honours. the willingness to step up to high pressure situations and convert penalties is in itself a good thing. The fact that you sometimes get defenders taking pens instead of strikers says to me that those who take and convert them must be rewarded.
