Do Vodacom generally install their own towers *inside* all these golf estates?

With 2,500+ people at any one time on the estate - why neglect them?

I went to visit my brother stays in Jackal Creek tonight there was ZERO signal. However the devices all show 3G and 3 bar signal, but ZERO throughput. I asked if it was normal and he said it's always slow, but the past week it's been ZERO throughput.

Is it possible they won't allow towers on premises - meaning if you're near the centre, you'd get ZERO throughput at all?

Well....I cant imagine the lanie people living on a golf estate being happy about a Vodacom tower on their freshly mowed canada green lawn. :-)

It is unfortunate that there are so many hoops to jump through to get a tower up. Also..it only takes a small group of people to throw a spanner in the works of getting a tower up I think. It could also be that the property rental is very high in places like a golf estate and it does not make financial sense for a tower if you compare the rental with the expected income it is forcast to generate on a monthly basis?

The above is just my speculation....not fact. :-)

Cool - thanks ...

But then if this was the case, you'd agree that you'd have no signal towards the centre?
I mean - what the strength of a tower, assuming it's right at the border?

I understand that with more people on the tower, the distance it reaches decreases ... meaning the middle have little to no signal.
Surely something can be done to ensure everyone gets signal?

Well...it would depend very much I would say on the towers that might be around and in the general vacinity of the estate and also the geographics of the area. Trees, buildings..construction material used in those buildings...blah blah blah. So many variables.

Eish

I need coffee...

I read the thread title and thought...

Hmmm if its 3 bars and no throughput then either the cell is congested.

But I mean if you live in one of these estates surely you can just get DSL or fibre :D

Not all estates are expensive ;)

Jackal Creek is between R800k and R1.4m

Anyhow - even if one had money to get ADSL, it's not often you can with all the problems of old exchanges, stolen lines, not enough ports and infrastructure issues. Even if he can get it, it needs to go through this stupid Smart Village system adding even more cost ... for someone that wants to heck mail and browse the occasional forum.

Perhaps Vodacom should look at these estates though - because if you get great signal/speed, you're sure to let your neighbour know and eventually everyone knows to avoid X or sign up with Y. Currently, it's avoid Vodacom if you move in

EDIT : When he moved into Jackal Creek, it was mentioned he'd get 1GB free through this Smart Villlage (http://www.smartvillage.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=20&Itemid=25) at up to 4mbit - but in reality the connection was more like a 256kbit

In fact there's more to it in today's South Africa than just whether Vodacom (or any other provider) is willing to put up a tower.

We have exactly the same problem in our existing scheme where although an operator offered to put up a mast, under Sectional Title the owners all have to agree at an AGM (which might be months away) for the Common Property to be used in this way. In many cases that hurdle is simply insurmountable. (Just one refusenik vote at the AGM can sink any such proposal, which is of course nuts....)

Often it only works when the developer asks a provider to install a mast BEFORE the Sectional Title rules kick in.

Good point :/

And in a case with 1000 units, it'll be near impossible to get a tower installed after the fact

After quite a while without the net, my brother phones Vodacom to be told they're aware of the issue ...

But how long will it take to actually fix the issue? :/

It's been weeks

As posted above, the big issue is to get permission to put up a tower. From a network perspective, we'd love to get more towers up.

Unfortunately, everyone wants coverage but no-one wants the towers that provide it.....

all cell operators should make their base stations look like palm tree's, I have seen a few in Durban, and from a distance you can't make out that it is a base station....

Look is not an obstructing issue.

what about micro cells jannie? or even some sort of DAS?

Make sense ... so we should blame the developer! :P
