Barons says my coil is faulty, and will be 2K to replace.... now thing is the mechanic I took it to(Dad's mate), he mentioned it was the coil too and replaced it with a second hand part which I paid him for already.. I'll see how this goes...

Yeah, I can get it done cheaper... but I will need to tow it again and I don't feel like it (or if rouxenator should spot me). The mechanic will need to refund me if it is indeed another faulty coil.

ok, just btw i have before bought a part and had VW fit it so they dont smoke me on the part, only labour
 
Holy smoke! I bought a coil for mine about 4 years ago from goldwagen for R300. R2k is a rip.

yep you can pick them up for cheap from autozone/golwagen etc and install is not complicated from what i know

i would change it in vw's parking lot :p
 
Yeah I'm being ripped... I could have replaced it myself... anyway... but what does the coil do anyway? only ignition? because as I mentioned my car could idle at first and cut out only on acceleration.. could the coil be responsible for this too?

the coil gives the spark from what i am aware, builds it up and gives it to the distributor.

but i am no expert
 
An ignition coil, which is also known as a spark coil is an induction coil in an automobile’s ignition system. It transforms a storage battery’s 12 volts to the thousands of volts needed to spark the spark plugs

A coil is a very important little cog in the whole scheme of things.

One of the easiest ways to pick up a faulty coil is to see how the car performs under load. If it idles OK,but starts missing or cutting out as you accelerate, then 99% of the time it is a coil packing up. So, to answer you question..the coil not only could be the culprit, but most definitely is guilty as charged. ;)

Ahh thanks.. darn if only the guy I took it to allowed me to buy the coil instead I would not be 2K out of pocket... aargh

This is why I said earlier in the thread that electronics gives one a warning they don't just die as per the OP

I meant the first mechanic that bought a second hand part, things would probably be different.. but I just want my car fixed and am impulsive so I will now fork out.

i can't believe he bought a second hand part, they aren't the most expensive thing on the planet.

he prob made a good profit on it too.

yeah i understand where you coming from and just want it sorted now.

some mechanics do the worst things..thats why its best to buy it yourself and give them and make sure you get the old one back

and 2k is alot ...but i guess the towing got to you ...
 
Got my car back and all is ok, [-]they also repaired my remote(rubber button was worn)[/-]. remote is unchanged I was mistaken.

Nah, he gave me the receipt for the part, was not looking for a profit... I'll have him refund it hopefully. I was just unlucky that he bought the wrong/faulty coil.

Thanks.... just wonder where I'll to take my car for a service when I return to SA next year, barons have been ok but too expensive.
