Which it gets from a turbocharger. Sure, it ups the kw/l to 83 and the co2/l to 97 but it costs R57k more than an Astra 1.6T with the same figures. Although, that being said, the Astra has 150kw less than the Mazda so in terms of efficiency the turbocharged Mazda is pretty good

I agree to a point. VW has great diesels (turbo), generally crappy petrol engines.
I found the mazda 2 engine quite decent, the mazda 3 engine was overly slack in a body that big.
btw, in that post i didnt understand, I am almost certain the kw's you mentioned were wrong.
The astra has 150kw less than the mazda? that would mean the astra had 40kw...

The Mazda2 is a little better, but only if you look at the 1.5 model. Its 51 kw/l is on par with the similarly overpriced Honda Jazz but its co2/l value of 90 is between the Corsa 1.4 and i20 1.6 which sell for R30k less.

NA engines are fine for entry level/bottom of range market
When it comes to performance cars, they are not as fuel efficient and they are the major polluters (CO2 emission)
That is why most manufacturers are moving towards turbos and superchagers, although few exception is a rule
