I just stopped and spoke to Telkom tech's who are working in Main Road and they confirmed that they are cutting over to new fibre back end today and ditching the copper.

In the next 10 days VDSL 40mb will become available depending on distance from exchange.

This is great news considering the suburb has only has access to 4mb ADSL max and serious congestion in the evenings!

OT
Damn I miss Gonubie, grew up in Beacon Bay and have many fond memories of holidays there.

Interesting. I recall that had fibre (next to the highway) for years, connecting the exchanges. The reason I recall is that a contractor cut through the fibre and the whole Gonubie telephone lines weer dead as well as the Vodacom tower next to the municipality (which is now also a beacon to drop your rubbish bags off).

As of this morning, my 4MB line is syncing just short of 5MB. I have not applied for the bump up to 10MB yet: SYNC.JPG

Why would that be?

Probably that you have been moved over to an ISAM port in the exchange.... VDSL "imminent".

Also means you will get "ASSIA'd" soon!!

Just changed my package in the Afrihost clientzone to 10mbps - will see over the next 48hrs whether it goes through. Will then need to buy a VDSL modem before moving to 40mbps (line attenuation looks good for 38.5mb so I should be good)

Any pointers towards a reasonably priced VDSL modem that does the job well (won't need wifi in it, just a modem)

I have some questions re VDSL etc, hopefully someone can enlighten me:

*If one has an ADSL 2+ router, and uprades their line to VDSL 20mb: when the change is made to VDSL, will the ADSL 2+ router stop syncing and house lose all internet until a VDSL modem is installed onto the line or will the ADSL router still sync at a reduced speed?
*I have seen forum posts about 20mb via an ADSL 2+ router - how would one achieve this without them changing the line/port to VDSL?

If you are on ADSL account then your ADSL router will still work.

ADSL2+ can handle up to 24Mbps, although Telkom offers it as a 20Mbps ADSL product.

Remember that the ISAM (or MSAN in the inland cases) are multi service access nodes, so it can handle all forms of DSL. To access the product you select, eg. VDSL, you will need a VDSL capable router.

Most VDSL routers are backwards compatible and can handle all ADSL profiles as well. However ADSL routers cannot handle VDSL.

Yes. VDSL doesn't sync at ADSL frequencies, so if VDSL you'll need a VDSL box on your end.

On the other hand, most modern ADSL routers can sync at ADSL2+, so you're good up to 24 mb/s.

The more I look at pricing and needs, 10mb would suffice, while for only R26 more per month (Afrihost), I can go to 20mb VDSL which is more than enough (40 is overkill).

If I go for 20mb ADSL I don't have to fork out for a VDSL modem. I am not fussed about not getting the VDSL upload speed bump.

How would one get 20mb ADSL in my scenario - Afrihost only has a 20mb VDSL package option for the line? Do I upgrade to this 20mb VDSL and keep the ADSL 2+ modem in play to get 20mb ADSL?

Just been playing silly buggers with Telkom iro of an upgrade from 4Mbps ADSL to 20Mbps VDSL.

The Telkom Pace 921VNX VDSL router will sync and work on both ADSL & VDSL without additional configuration.

The clients D-Link 2500U stopped syncing when VDSL was activated on the line.

And I am on 10MB (probably one of the first in the suburb as Afrihost had to manually twist Telkom's arm as it is not officially available yet)

They have clearly changed my port or something as DOWNSTREAM ATTENUATION came down from 1.35 to 10.5db now

This means I can get full 40MB VDSL when I want: MAX SYNC SPEEDS.JPG

I am very chuffed!

There are two guys working on the telkom exchange in Abbotsford, stopped and spoke to one guy who says they being upgraded but wasnt sure to what just that internet will be a lot faster.

Also now syncing at 5MB.

I'm with Vox fatpipe and telkom 4MB/s, I'm guessing I would need to upgrade with Telkom?

Yes, you should be good for at least 10mb now. I am syncing at 12mb this morning....

VDSL in Gonubie ?... Telkom is retarded. Meanwhile in Beacon Bay we are still on 4mbps.

Just that slightly higher sync and Youtube is instant as apposed to previously buffering for 5-10sec.
