For this article I’d like to take a different direction concerning Linux. Is it all too typical on the internet to hear a Linux user go full-on zealot style and say, "YEAH! I use Linux! F**k Microsoft! You people are sheeple! Down with the status quo!" Blah, blah, blah, frickin’ blah. Nobody cares. It’s as if a Linux user can’t possibly say anything about the operating system he or she uses without mentioning Microsoft and/or what most people use for their personal computing and how it’s "wrong/bad/evil", etc. To those zealots, I say unto thee: Shaddup. You’re not helping.

Truly happy Linux people couldn’t care less about Microsoft whatsoever. Instead, they just get down to business and make things work. Whether it’s for desktop, laptop, media center use or what-have-you, instead of bickering about Microsoft they’re getting things done, which of course is what matters the most.

The good Linux users I know don’t even talk about Microsoft. Never will you see a "windoze", "winblows", "M$" or "Micro$oft" in anything they blog about. To note, those that do write those childish things are morons because as said above, nobody cares. You don’t see me calling Linux users tux turds, penguin poopers or GUI-challenged, do you?

Good Linux users tell good stories about the things they’re doing now, such as:

"On my 32-bit system I can now access all 4GB of my RAM. Now I don’t have to buy a new computer!"

"I’ve been able to keep my computer running for two solid weeks straight without a single reboot."

"I really like the Evolution mail client. I really like the iCalShare connectivity too!"

"I love the games I’m playing. Great stuff!"

These are the types of stories I like to hear. And yes, they’re out there on the internet. Sometimes it takes a little time to seek them out but they do exist. You can find happy Linux users that say nothing of Microsoft because it simply doesn’t matter.

At no time from these folks will you see, "Well I was using Outlook.. what a PIECE OF CRAP THAT WAS.. I HATE MICRO$OFT! Evolution rulez!!11!1 KDE! GNOME! (penguins.. tux.. uh.. no mouse.. yeah!)"

No, no, no.. stop. Just stop.

I suggest a new line of thinking for fervent Linux users: Cut the anti-Microsoft crap. Cut it completely out of your conversation. Cut it out of your spoken word, your blogs, your videos and so on. Why are you giving Microsoft free advertising? People don’t care about your anti-Microsoft opinions because they’ve already heard them a million times by at least a million other people, so you are not adding anything new or helpful to the conversation.

Tell us what you do with Linux. Tell us the apps you use. Tell us why you prefer specific Linux apps over others. Give us useful information.

Computer use as far as operating systems is concerned is to the point where people will use what they use because that’s what they’re used to. Windows people will continue to use Windows. Mac people will continue to use OS X. Linux folks their distro o’ choice. Yes, very obvious, but that’s the way it is.

Those who are interested in Linux want to hear about (duh) Linux, and not your anti-Microsoft point of view. So please, try and be helpful, because after all, all computers are sh*t.

And to Linux zealots, fsck you.

:erm:
Argh how boooorinng...
:D

What fascinates me is the way in which Linux always gets attacked.

Take the Linux section on any on-line forum, you are bound to find some trolls that is always "Linux this and Cli that, user friendly this and installation that".

Do we do the same in the Windows section of forums? I have chirped the occasional "Install Linux" in the virus and security section of many forums, but it irks me to see how MS lovers troll Linux sections.

WE DO NOT CARE THAT WINDOWS WORKS FOR YOU - WE ARE HAPPY WITH LINUX AS IT IS YOU ARE HAPPY WITH WINDOWS - LEAVE US ALONE KTHNX BYE.

Case closed, move along now my little trolls.

An the funny thing is, I have not seen this on Mac forums. Why single out Linux?????

Ya that does happen... but the article makes a good point, we should not react the same way, it's pointless and does not really help the linux image for some users who are open to learn.

But dsmn it's so tempting to get a **** fanboy worked up :p

"You don’t see me calling Linux users tux turds, penguin poopers or GUI-challenged, do you?"

I liked that bit...its funny :D

I am loving Ubuntu....and dont care much anymore for MS...but still have to use it at work as Vodacom IT only supports XP "bleh"

But if someone likes windows and the slowing down of their machines....then hey...whatever blows your skirt up. :p

I'm not sure, I do on occasion rip off MS, I am fan of *nix though, not necessarily Linux but the Unix OS in general. Mostly AIX but I do have Suse 11 as my desktop. It's just so much fun making fun of windows users as it's hard not to sometimes.

Yes, yes, and one of my best friends works for Microsoft as a software architect so we have this debate almost all the time :D

i agree with the general gist of that article

This is now going a bit off-topic, but Linux was never intended to be a Windows killer/replacement/whatever.

It was written in 1991 to mimic MINIX (a OS designed to teach some basic principals on software engineering to students) and be much more usable. It became all the more popular as the "hackers" fell in love with it.

The GNU philosophy, the rock solid foundations of Linux and the open source nature will for ever make it popular with the market.

The fact that Linux has adapted through all these years sends out a very clear message, we will not go away.
Have a look at most of the hardware advances in the past and present and you will see that Linux is the only one keeping up with the development. In most cases they are the first to implement and run with newly developed technology, and this says a lot.

They are not dictating the marking by telling hardware developers/engineers what they would like, it is more like - "Hit us with your best shot, we are willing and ready to adapt!"

This is also the reason why you will not find a more diverse OS on this planet. From desktop to server, from GFX rendering farms to huge clusters, all basically the same underneath, run by the self same kernel.

For the most part the kernel developers have incredible foresight, take a simple example like ram.
I'm not sure what the limit is on other OS's, last year it was 64GB on Linux (been like that for the whole of the 2.6.x kernel), with the newest kernels they lifted that limit and you can now potentially have unlimited amounts of RAM in your system.

Is there another OS that offers this? Not needed now you say, and 2 years back 4GB of DESKTOP RAM was unheard of!

This is a petty example, but there are thousands such examples just showing that a lot of though and research goes into the development of the kernel. What is more exciting is that some of the hardware vendors have now come to the party and is openly sharing and contributing to Linux.

One such example is HP/ProCurve who have a modified Linux running on their servers/routers/etc. (nothing new) but they are taking it further with open sourcing some of their blade servers so that new modules can be created by anyone who wants to enhance their own ProCurve server.

This is exciting beyond believe, from a humble message board entry to this huge influence in the world, and this on the philosophy of openly sharing, who would have thought it would be possible?

Compete? With who?

It's an OS, not a religion. I like using OSS because it's free. For some things I still have to use MS, and then I do. Horses for courses.

Ok. I wont talk about "windoze", "winblows", "M$" or "Micro$oft", then.

But that OS from Redmond sure does suck! :D

I agree with the article.

Bashing another product without any reason or logic to make your propaganda look better is weak.
