SA may get another public holiday

Cape Town - South Africans might get an extra public holiday in 2011 if national census day is declared a public holiday.

The proposal for a public holiday – in the hope that people would be home that day – had arisen from increasing political insistence that next year's population census should be more accurate than those of previous years.

Howard Gabriels, chairperson of the statutory Statistics Council in South Africa, told the standing committee on finance on Wednesday that he nevertheless believed the holiday proposal would do more harm than good.

He said it had become a trend in South Africa for holidays to fall alongside weekends so that everyone could have a long weekend. Therefore no-one would be found at home – everyone would be on the beach.

On the other hand, the Statistician General, Pali Lehohla, said the key to a more accurate count was for people to be home, so that they could be enumerated that evening.

In the 1996 census an estimated 10% of the population had not been counted.

In the 2001 census the omission was an estimated 17%.

Lehohla said that in order to prevent a similar situation, a public holiday would need to be declared – or four times as many workers (up to 400 000) would have to be employed to help with the counting.

not good news for businesses :( We already lose millions to lost productivity.
 
For workers - yes.
For business - no.
For scholars - no.
 
This is just plain dumb. I haven't heard of any other country that gives public holiday so that the census team can gather better information. Do they think everyone is going to be home? Why dont they just collect the info on the weekends then. Most of these census guys are temporary workers anyways.
 
Doesn't SA already have the most public holidays in the world?
 
It would be a once off people! :rolleyes:

If they make that day a Wednesday, I reckon it could work. Its smack in the middle of the week, with little possibility of people making it a long weekend.

Ja- Once off is OK.

Dunno why they can't make it a Saturday though...
 
I think if we're going to have another public holiday it should be Mugarbage Bucket Kick Day - a day where people take to the streets and dance and celebrate the croaking of our continent's hitler.

Do you think the census workers will work on a public holiday? Maybe if they get double pay. If so, it would be cheaper to employ the additional 400 000 workers. BTW how many census workers are currently being used?

Jeez, talk about the bitching. It's ONCE OFF.

Better than having everyone out and about at work. How many of you took at least 1 day off during the SWC? :rolleys:
 
Those that think it's a bad idea are most welcome to work on that day but me I will be at home chilling waiting to get counted ...;)

When I started reading, I already saw myself doing something else... If it is declared a holiday, I will most likely be part of the 10% or 17% that won't be counted...:D
