I recently bought a PC and (a bit late I guess) I need to know if it was a good deal. I paid R8250 for it. The specs are:

Intel Quad Core 2.4GHz processor
4GB 800 Ram
500GB HDD (2 x 250GB)
8500 512mb Graphics Card
Creative Speaker System
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
22" Samsung Syncmaster 8000:1 LCD Screen

Let me know what you guys think of this. I am no Tech Fundi though!

Thanks

Looking at dealer prices it'd cost about R6500 (excl vat) to put that together. So if your price is incl VAT and an operating system, then it's pretty good.

Yes, I know the G card isn't too good, but that was going to really push up the price. I'll get that later. I do play games on it, and it's not too bad right now.

It is brand new.

I took the Windows XP pack with it (was advised not to take Vista yet). And it is inclusive of VAT.

that price isnt bad, but im getting:

-q6600 processor
-2Gig 1066 Ram
-asus p5qc or intel g45
-500w coolermaster
-500 Gig Seagate
-HD4850
-and decent case

for plus minus R6000.00 to R6500.00 next month but no OS:)

so can anyone tell me how to go about getting one for my self?
and if the DDR3 memory sticks are available?
Also what are these rigs meant to functions as: Gaming, Databases, servers??

thanks

Most people would probably point you towards www.zones.co.za as they're in Durban, unless you'd rather support someone on the forum (who might even be able to offer you better prices).

Yes, DDR3 is available, although there is quite a debate on DDR2 vs. DDR3 in terms of the price of DDR3 being worth it or not.

This would be intended as a gaming rig.

Contact "FTM COMPUTERS" <[email protected]>. I got my PC from him. His prices compare very favourably to PC Zones!

cool thanks, FTM happens to be in PMB so I will check them out.
What I am looking for is this:
1. Very fast computer: application load times, response times, and able to do lots of multi-tasking
2. I run large datasets using Statistical packages (SAS, etc); simulations mainly so need something with large FSB and Cache; lots of RAM and responsive hard drive
3. I do very little grpahics work, so Graphics card is not a deal breaker; but would be good to have in case I want to watch DVD
4. Have linux (ubuntu mainly) compatibility
5. Large excellent resolution screen (24" )

can someone put a few options for me so I know what to ask for,
many thanks

Budget?

Ask the guy from FTM. He's really helpful in getting your package together. He helped me a lot - and I know very little about the technology.

Budget is a issue and I should have mentioned I am student. I am aiming for something like R7500 tops.

To think, the 24" I bought cost more than the entire system you want :o

If you are looking at heavy simulation work, get a quad core Core 2, but get one of the new q9xxx series. They have more cache (except the 9300), run cooler, and have the SSE4.1 instructions, which may help you if the package you run is optimised for that.

4Gigs of ram is good, don't need to go overboard, since the cpu is doing more crunching than anything else. I would also suggest a 64bit operating system, which Ubuntu has I believe.

Your hard drive will be a bottleneck, since your budget doesn't include enough for a Western Digital Raptor.

Hope this helps a bit :)
