Im building a PC upgrade for a friend and was wondering if this is good enough? He wil re-use HDD etc...

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200
Chaintech/Biostar 9600GT
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Mushkin DDR2 800 2gig Ram kit/Corsair DDR2 800 2gig ram kit

Budget is As low under R6000 as possible just for the above, ie mobo, graphics card, ram, processor....Oh and he needs a case:(

You can buy some of the cheaper brands of RAM and then you should be able to afford an 8800GT, which will definitely offset the minute (if any) performance difference.

Funny, my friend asked me about a setup almost identical to that last night..
Anyway:

x2 on cheaper RAM. Don't skimp on the PSU.

Will a 400w PSU be enough for a 9600GT? I dont think he wants a 8800Gt becuz of the price/performance diff...And hes only using a 19' Monitor...Any ram recomendations?

Brand is more important than rating, OEM 400W PSU can suck much more than a say Seasonic 380W PSU, what kind of PSU do you have currently?

Did you ask someone about the stuff you are buying before this post? Seriously one of my friends is studying to become EE and he is helping someone build a PC with the exact same budget and almost identical components.

Haha no hey i made it up from my head in class today when he told me he wants to upgrade:)Um was thinking about the Zaps supperchannel case from Zaps at the waterfront, its there own custem case for like R560 and all it say is 400 or (450 watt:confused:) psu

Can't say about the case, the PSU could be anything, problem with OEM/Cheap PSU's are that they either have crappy ratings on the 12v rail and/or don't deliver the specs they promise.

Anyway brands that I personally haven't had any problems with:
Enermax, Seasonic, AOpen, Codegen (yes they are cheap but for some reason none have died on me :) ).

Enermax that I own is the best I've ever owned but their prices are just too high now.

Ones that gave up but didn't do any damage to the system:
Antec, some OEM brands.

The ones that actually blew up and damaged my system:
Thermaltake, reindeer or something like that (OEM brand).

Other users might be able to post PSU's they have used that were great also. Some say Coolermaster is great, they are going for great prices...

Agreed, my AOpen PSU is still going strong. But I haven't had any problems with Thermaltake PSUs, though :)

And my 600W iSonic is still going strong after more than a year and some decent load. Despite not being a well-known brand. I am pretty stoked :)

To each his own, mine actually blew up a month after warranty expired and killed the GFX card (luckily I got a RMA on the card). Was a Thermaltake 480W Butterfly.

Yep, maybe I've just been lucky :)

But I can definitely vouch for AOpen, haven't had any problems with the last 6 AOpen PSUs that I've owned. :)

Are there any cheap cases that come with a desent PSu to run a 9600Gt? Its the last thing im looking for before i give him the quotes?

Have a look at the Antec cases, they come with decent psu's which i have yet to have a hassle with :)
