Hi all,

Can you help me as to which is a good replacement card for Asus 280?

Budget is 3k.Have been using red team gpu a while now but any input would help.

Thanks

New or second hand?

If new, then I'd recommend the RX 470 in that price range, it really doesn't have any competition in the segment. Wootware has a few: http://www.wootware.co.za/computer-hardware/video-cards-video-devices/shopby/radeon_rx_470

Second hand is tricky as anything last gen from AMD that's better than the 280 is very power hungry and you'll need a decent power supply, so I'd probably recommend a GTX 970 in that case.

You're probably looking at getting about an average performance boost of around 30% by upgrading to one of these (that's a very rough number), I guess you should decide if that's worth it.

Also resolution? I have a superflower 650 watt psu and a gigabyte windforce 280. I was looking at this question too and I'm hoping to pick up a 8 gig 390 off carb. Hopefully the psu is sufficient.

Cheers.

Corsair VS550

Cutting it very close, what other components do you have, cpu, hdd etc?

If you are OCing the cpu or use a power hungry amd 8 core it's not gonna be enough, the 290 when overclocked can has a peak draw of ~360W for short periods when overclocked.

How power hungry is the RX470/480's?

Frugal compared to the older amd cards, rx 480 can peak at about 155W but the average is lower. RX 470 is about 30W less than the 480. Your psu is fine for these.

About the same as the 970. If you can afford a 480 get it.

I suspect with the latest amd drivers that the 480 will beat the 970, The reason I say this is that the 480 has come very close to the 1060 in dx11 titles while winning most in the dx12/vulkan titles, the 1060 is on par with the 980 so if the 480 comes that close to the 1060 in dx11 then I reckon it will beat the 970.

cpu is haswell i3 4170 and 1tb hdd and 8gb ddr3 1333

That's fine but do keep in mind that that cpu will bottleneck the gpu in some titles, even the latest kaby lake i3 7350k overclocked to 5GHz has that issue. It's not the end of the world but something to be aware of.

Yup, AMD nailing their drivers lately.

RX 480 showing a slight edge over the 1060 now in newer titles (overall score at 17:45)
