Good Rpg games?

Freedom is also subjective . Being able to go where ever you want might to be freedom to one person while being able to shape the outcome and influence the game is freedom to another person.

I didn't Sandbox games are bad I said they are bad rpg's imho. They are more adventure games but for some reason the developers have decided to brand them as rpg's. For me in a rpg you influence the outcome of the game in sandbox games that never happens with the exception of perhaps the fallout 1+ 2 games.

NWN and Baldur's gate had sandbox elements but they weren't as open the bethesda games since they always put the story first. I expect Dragon Age to do the same thing. It won't restrict you much except for certain scenarios but the main focus will still be the story.

I don't consider Oblivion and Morrowind as adventure games simply because you can choose how to develop your character, something you can't really do in a adventure game. I actually find them somewhat more realistic in terms of acquiring skills than any of the level-based RPG's, because you increase a certain skill by using that skill, rather than gaining enough experience to level up.

As for good Sandbox RPG games, the only ones I know is Morrowind and Oblivion.

+1

What bugged me about Oblivion and what bugs me about Fallout is that mobs never become more difficult or easier to beat - throughout the game right up to level 20, they're the same difficulty. BOOM HEADSHOT! I don't really like that.

I also agree with Oblivion feeling like a glorified adventure game. It's one of the main reasons it never appealed to me. The average adventure game actually seems to have an engrossing story line. But then, there are those who enjoyed it.

In my opinion, Fallout 3 is at least the best job Bethesda's done regarding RPGs to date. It's just unfortunate that it feels ridiculously easy, that it never gets more difficult and that once in a while it really does feel like Oblivion with guns.

My favourite opened-ended RPG (and favourite game of all time) has been Gothic II. It has the main elements of an RPG without a tasteless storyline. Long story short, you start off as an escaped convict from the first Gothic - you never find out why you were imprisoned, you never find out your name and you're one character. One of the first choices you have is how you're going to enter Khorinis. You can kill the trader who carries a pass, or you can promise to do him a favour one day. Or you can pick turnips and do a few other chores for a nearby farmer who will give you farming clothes and let you say you work for him to get into town. Later it progresses to the basic "class" choice... Fire Mage (the most difficult and rewarding to accomplish), Paladan, Mercenary, Thief and perhaps a few others I don't remember... I always chose to be the Fire Mage - the "respect" the NPCs show a Fire Mage rocks :D

I loved Gothic II because it wasn't ever an "easy" game, but it was a game that made you feel fantastic to have been able to accomplish. My favourite part was where you had to get to a castle near the Mines, but the castle was being laid to siege by orcs. I remember running around and around trying to find the busted catapult that lead up into it and screaming, "Ahhhhhh!!!" as Orcs would run after me and you just hear their massive blades narrowly missing you.

It was fantastic :)

It was one of the few games that have actually felt like I was living it :)

Gothic 2 was excellent. I saw the new gothic 3 expansion just went gold so we should have a new gothic before xmas.:)

Yep, yep :D Looking very forward to it. Think its release date is the 17th of this month, but I'm not certain. I'm also looking forward to the new Arcania: A Gothic Tale (basically the fourth in the series, but I guess you'd know this :p) being made by the new developers, Spellbound.

*rubs fingers together greedily* I can't wait :D

If they can ever release a Gothic game that isn't bug central, I might consider spending money. As for Titan Quest, it was good fun for a week or two :D

Chrono Trigger was/is a classic and beautiful game :)

Def agree 100% :D

Titan's Quest is a hack-and-slash Diablo clone that should be shot. I rank that along with Dungeon Siege, Silverfall and similar :)

Awh okay I'll admit it wasn't the best ever but def better than DS imo. :p

Okay I'm going to add, Severance Blade of Darkness(If that counts?) and Enclave, I'm quite sure you'll hate those too lol.

haha :D I'm a sucker for a storyline, if a game has an interesting one, I'll play it through, otherwise I lose interest pretty rapidly.

Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege - they're games that are fun when you play them with someone else. But as single player games they put me to sleep :( And even then, I'd much rather play an MMO where there's some semblance of autonomous life.

I played Severance once, and I own Enclave, I don't remember the former, and Enclave was sort of an "ooo, this looks interesting" purchase which yeah.. I didn't take to :(

I don't hate games... I think every game has its merits. I've only ever played one game that I thought was truly disgusting - Psychotoxic. An absolutely hideous game. It's a very, very badly made FPS

@ Mephisto - Only Gothic game I ever played that was buggy was Gothic 3... It was also the worst in the series, but I still managed to enjoy it :)

TQ had ragdoll and a superpunch it was the best thing ever, guys would fly over hills and bounce all over the place, not to mention the chain lighting, I think combat and gameplay are very important to me in a game so yah.

DS is still incredibly boring imo but I suppose you are roleplaying, lol.

Love those games, my favs esp Severance, ah different strokes for different folks I guess.

I too played this unpleasant unholy game, it was truly awful.

I'm going to add Arx Fatalis (really made me feel like an adventurer.) and Dark Messiah (Great combat), love those games too.
