What RPG game are out there that are similar to Oblivion and Morrowind i.e. open ended sandbox gameplay?

Really looking for some good ones

Fallout 3 :) Made by the same people :)
Sacred 2, Fable is also good.

The original Fallout and its sequel are a little dated by today's standards, but still very good. You can download them --- cheap, DRM-free, and fixed to work with XP and Vista --- from www.gog.com.

Fable was good when it came out.
The witcher Enhance this is really awesome.

Fable and The Witcher aren't open-ended though... But if you're not strictly looking for open-ended RPGs, then those are definitely ones you should give a shot.

As for open-ended... Fallout 3 is definitely a great catch right now though - as were the original two. Another is Gothic II - one of my all time favourites... A lot of people can't get the hang of it though and find it difficult.

Another is Two Worlds... But I've never tried it so I can't say what it's like, but it was hit with heavy criticism regarding its clunky controls, resource hogging and lack of depth.

If you don't mind "classic" RPGs... Planescape: Torment and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura are two that have more depth than most RPGs these days.

I'd also recommend Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines... Another favourite...

Of course there's also the Baldur's Gate series...

But as has been said... If you're looking strictly for open-ended and - as you said - sandbox gameplay... Fallout 3 is the easiest option to go for. If you liked Oblivion, you'll love Fallout - it's amazing what happens when Bethesda manage to do something right :)

Bloodlines isn't sandbox. The orignal fallouts also qualify as sandbox games. I dislike sandbox rpg's since generally they are poor rpg's imho. Much prefer the linear obsidian, bioware and black isle rpg's since their stories are 99% of the time vastly superior to the sandbox rpg's.

Oblivion and Morrowind are anything but poor, 2 of the best games I have played.

I'm sure many other feel the same, but I guess it comes down to personal preference

Fable 1, Summoner (average but good), FFVIII (psx or pc version)! these are not sandbox but still good !

Lets just say if you go to any of the hardcore rpg forums around the web that those two games aren't loved by many there.

But this comes down to ones definition of what makes a game an rpg. For me essential elements of an rpg is to influence how the story turns out.

In oblivion I had no choice to change how the story turns out. I also found the main story very boring.

For me oblivion was more a adventure game with rpg elements. It was a good but I certainly don't rank it as a good/great rpg.

+1

And I know Bloodlines isn't sandbox - I was just suggesting RPGs he might be interested in if he isn't looking for strictly open-ended/sandbox type.

Oblivion, Morrowind, etc never really appealed to me :( The best story arc in Oblivion was that of the Dark Brotherhood - thought it was well written.

whats Sandbox mean?

where you can pretty much run around and play the game the way you want, its not just like a straight line all the way to the end, you go any where do anything you need to , and finish the game in any order you want to.

I think the reason that Oblivion and Morrowind have a more limited storyline is because they are Sandbox. Some events would have a effect on the entire world, and you have to script the NPC's for that possible event. And since you can visit almost any place at any time, every NPC in the game have to be scripted for that. It means that a lot of work have to done for one choice. If you then look at the number of choices that can be made in games like NWN, it becomes a massive amount of work.

In games like NWN, you are limited to smaller area for a duration, so any scripts is also limited to that area, thus a lot less work. There is a cumulative effect though, as you move through the acts, but there is only a limited number of things to really remember, like alignment. For example, a random NPC in Act3 won't know what choices you made in Act1, unless it is required by the storyline.

It doesn't mean that Sandbox games are bad while the other is good. If you want a lot of freedom, you would choose a Sandbox game, which have a limited storyline. If you want to make changes that effect the entire world, you would take a game that isn't Sandboxed, but have a more elaborate storyline.

There might be one day that you get a Sandbox game with world-changing choices, but that would take a long time to develop and would be quite large.

and that is why Dragon Age is sounding good ... because 1) it looks to be NWN but sandboxy and 2) has been in development for ages, hence the supposedly massive story :D
