Hello,

I am a 38 year old fool that does not like to read.

So I want to start, maybe it's too late in life, who knows.

But any good suggestions would help. Thanks

What sort of theme do you think would appeal to you?

Non-fiction?

In fiction, crime and mystery, humourous, sci-fi/fantasy?

Actually don't know.

From a series perspective I like sitcoms.

And things like criminal minds.

I would recommend short stories. The sherlock Holmes stories at 20 30 pages and great easy reads. Will be a great start! All the best on your endeavour!

Okay, I'll recommend two. No idea if you'll like them or not:

Non-fiction: Guns, germs, and steel by Jared Diamond. It’s about the history of humans and how and why civilisations spread the way they did. It’s a little old but still a good read.

Fiction: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Very few people read the book to the end but that’s okay because each page is hilarious.

There's always 'The Devotion of Suspect X' I suppose. However you'd need to short list a few genres you do not like e.g. fantasy, horror, etc.

Also how serious, hard, or easy reading like book do you want to start with?

I mean comedy wise and bit of more easier reading there is things like hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, dirk gently or even bad omens.

Yes I agree. Audio books get your head into the right space. I listen to audio books whilst doing all my work at home or sitting in traffic

Read the harry potter series. It started out as childrens book, but the audience kinda matured as the book were being written so the content matures as well.

What ever you chose I recommend that you finish it. That is why I recommended short stories. Finishing a book even a short story is a great psycological accomplishment. I read shantaram a few years ago at 1000 pages its a tome of a book, this is not where you want to start. Get those short stories down see what you like or dont like and then take it from there. If you are based in the Pretoria area google a book store called Megabooks. ITs an awesome secondhand book store everything from classics to the latest books and best of all great prices. All the best on the journey stick it out its worth it!

Currently reading I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes - very easy to ready and if you like criminal minds, it'll be right up your alley.
(Don't be put off by how thick the book is- you won't want to put it down).

Start with audiobooks

Are audioooks the same as reading, don't you need to concentrate while reading?

I don't think I'd be able to concentrate fully if I listen to a book rather than read.

Haha I dont know how to explain this.. traffic is easy enough to concentrate on the book thing around home I mean like making dinner, working in the garden etc. If the task is "mindless" and focus isnt needed to much then its easy to focus mentally on the book atleast thats what I found. This also makes the task more enjoyable. I dont mind making dinner, working in the garden etc as it gives me a chance to listen to my favourite book.

On this note.

I dont read and listen to the same book. So I am effectively working through two at a time.
