Good starter book

OP you can't go wrong with The Hobbit as a first book.

Failing that Robin Hobb also makes for excellent reading.

On a non-fantasy more real world tone Bill Bryson is also an excellent option.

Start with Terry Pratchett.

I'm going to be flamed for this but I don't find his books easy to read at all and generally quite laborious.

His best book was in fact Nation although no super fan would agree.

Is it a good idea to get a e-reader or should I stick to audio and printed material?

If it's using e-ink yes, if it's using a screen no.

I only bought a Kindle last year for the first time and it was the best thing I bought all year except for my OLED TV.

It brought me back into reading and also books are dirt cheap.

If like me you'll only do about a book a month then <$10 per book is a bargain.

*****

Also the backlit Kindle is the winner. You can read anywhere and everywhere all the time. Even a waterproof one now if you want to take it to the bath/pool.

No ways! You gonna die of boredom. Me anyways.

It's an easy read that was really the point.

It's also very well paced so not sure how you would die of boredom as it's constantly got action going.

The request was for a "starter book". The Hobbit is perfect in that regard.

Lord of The Rings is not a good starter in that regards for being massive and too daunting but also for having very many flat spots where you will indeed get bored.

Wish kindle had a thing like music or video subscription where you pay a monthly fee and then have access to all the books.

There is Kindle Unlimited for exactly that.

But I didn't bother due to the rate I'm reading at I'd rather just buy to own for very similar money and choose exactly what I want.

Ah! I missed that. Will check it out. My wife reads a lot so she will love it.

You will unfortunately need to change your Amazon country (don't recall needing a VPN) to make it work.

I'd probably get it at some point when the kids are older and the family sharing benefits make more sense.

Now that you mention it. I think I did try it once but it said not available in your country. That's probably the reason.

Currently reading I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes - very easy to ready and if you like criminal minds, it'll be right up your alley.
(Don't be put off by how thick the book is- you won't want to put it down).
yup good book - and not a genre I would ever willingly choose

Totally agree. I was never a reader and around 15yrs ago (age 33 or so) I started and got into the Belgariad series.
Wow, blown away, read all 5 books.
I found the series last year on bidorbuy and bought it for R150.
Looking forward to reading it again, by far the best, much easier read than Tolkien
um - you know there is a follow-on another series - with 5 books as well :) :)

and then the prequels (Belgarath and Polgara each have their own book)

I almost enjoyed the Elenium series more

I just love how Eddings develops his characters

And then all the other stand-alone books as well

The book I reckon everybody should read at least once: George Orwell: 1984 - I had it as a set book in high school and have re-read it many, many times.

I do also highly recommend Bill Bryson: A Short History of Nearly Everything
