Interesting to know:

Seoul - Samsung Electronics, one of the world's largest computer chip makers, said on Monday it has developed a new solid-state drive that is expected to replace hard disk drives in laptop computers.

Samsung said its 256-gigabyte solid state drive (SSD) for data storage is 2.4 times faster than traditional hard drives. The company plans to begin production of SSDs this year.

The new SSD "represents a bold step in the shift to notebooks with significantly improved performance and larger storage capacities," the company said in a statement.

Samsung described the new SSD - 2.5 inches long and 9.5mm thick - as the world's smallest of its kind. It can read up to 200 megabytes of data per second.

Citing market research agency iSuppli, it said 35% of notebook computers would use the SSD by 2012.

I know it'll make laptops expensive, but at least your data'll be better protected.

Unless... how secure are SSD against EMP devices?

I can only imagine how much that would cost

Dell has a 64GB SSD option on some of their notebooks at around R7500 a pop. :D

I can't wait personally. Can you imagine how fast a database will run on a couple of these puppies in a stripe formation? :D :D :D

Just for the OS and page file, I'm guessing. Everything else can go on a traditional HDD.

But why have 2 drives in a laptop, whereas 1 is enough and save on weight.
The SSD are abit bigger and heavier than your trad HDD's.

There already a couple of smaller sizes available big enough to hold WinXp.
Look @ the + side no moving components that could fail. :)

From what I hear the SSD's are lighter than conventional drives. Well the one available now are. No moving parts, no motor. Just think of them as a bunch of CF cards "stuck" together. I miss my old HP with its 2 HDDs, Had half a TB in it, and the page file was on the second drive. Little thing used to fly! :D

Can Imagine Voodoo Tech & Falcon West will buy some and install then in thier Super High Priced Monters $10K+ PC's :p
