Goodbye Iburst

But hold on, the Do level 3 package is R 554, is that including your normal line rental?
What happens when you exceed the 3 gig cap? Does the 30gig local come standard with this package?

This rental thing is always confusing people.

Since I already had a phone line the total extra cost on my telkom account is the R554 for the D0 3 package.
If I never had a phone line then there would be an extra cost for the rental.

At this stage the capping system is not functioning properly as TI are busy doing tests on it, after those tests are complete I will be hard capped at 3GB international with the "free" 30GB local after cap.

So yes the 30GB local is standard with this package, 20GB local free for the Do 2, and 10GB local free for the Do 1, and is also the reason for the TI testing as when you hit your 3GB cap it is supposed to put you on a different IP which is local only.
At this stage this local IP change is not working with everyone, me been one of those that it is not working with and hence I still have full international.

Hopefully the above clears up any confusion.

Great thanks so much for clearing that up. It would be great if that was on their website. :)
Only difference with other ISP is that you can split the intl. and the local traffic with the 2 acounts. Would be nice if you had the local and intl. on the do packages at the same time. So for eg. you could browse myadsl and it would only come off your local bandwidth.

The only lousy part is that if you use local BEFORE you reach your 3GB cap it comes off that cap which is a waste, hopefully at some stage they will rectify it with the "split" as you mentioned above, but I'm not holding my breath on that happening anytime soon.

Still once I hit the 3GB international cap I can always use Axxess vouchers for international and TI for the local.

Yeah got it. Thanks again. If all goes according to plan, I will have true 4mb ADSL or maybe even less than that for about R300 per month more with a bigger cap. It is a no brainer if you have the spare cash.

2 years ago I went with iBurst 'cause dsl wasn't available in my area.
They do have their moments, however due to the inconsistent signal strength and low signal quality combined with the ineptitude of some of their staff, I decided to give Telkom another go. (Don't get me started on their "account migration" option).
6 months down the line, and my account is still not sorted out.

Telkom installed adsl in about 4 weeks and they sent a supervisor (to do some QA) with the tech.
All in all a pleasant experience from Telkom... who knew :)
Now, only if iBurst can pick up a few pointers from the fixed line operator!

not sure what you mean:
i) other ISPs split traffic in their int/local packages, or
ii) you can get 2 accounts - one for local and one for international.

if you meant (i), then that is not true as all other ISPs do it the way Telkom will be doing it. As for (ii), you can use your Do3 till the international runs out. Then get a prepaid and split accordingly. This, of course, is what you will have to do with any ISP that offers splits accounts. Unless you get a prepaid plus an IS/SAIX local only.

With Telkom, you have to use your primary account until it is finished, only then can you max out the local. With for eg openweb, you can use a local account simultaneously as the international by using Routesentry for example. Much better as you are not using your international cap for local crap.

marine1 if you are talking about those 3/27GB type of IS accounts afaik they work exactly like the telkom one so you can't seperate out the local from the international before you finish the international cap. thus you cannot use routesentry. of course things may have changed since the time i looked at the issue so i will be more than happy if you can show me someone who has been able to successfully split the traffic on a single account using routesentry.

No, I am getting a SAIX 5 gig account. That is going to be used for intl stuff. Then I will also at the same time get a local 30gig account via IS and that will be used for local only. I will then use Routesentry to split between the 2.
One cannot split it on 1 account as far as I know.

I decided to tempt fate and enquire about ADSL, since everyone so vehemently defended Telkom.

Nothing has changed, in my opinion.

I logged a request via their web site to find out whether my house is within the maximum range from the exchange. I also have other questions, but i decided not to complicate the request. I explained that I needed to know this before I would apply for the requisite telephone line.

Two days later i receive a call from mr x gladly informing me that he wanted to send an ADSL information brochure to my email address. I explained the situation to him after he said he had none of the pertinent information which I had provided (including the request).

Then he said that he couldn't help me and that I would have to wait for "someone to call" me.

They simply don't cater for or can't imagine someone not having a telkom telephone line, so you are virtually forced to order a telephone line before you can attempt to order ADSL, even if you potentially do not qualify for ADSL because of the ADSL restrictions.

I still think all of the Telkom ADSL ...clients? have all been caught by the initial sales-service and are going to be horribly surprised when they experience a problem and try to resolve it with telkom.

I have had no problems with IBurst since they started. Possibly it's the reseller that makes the difference (Tradepage here)

No complaints from me about Telkom service as far as SA companies go, been with them since June/July last year and very happy with the speeds and stability.
