:( Hey guys I have a big problem. It all started when got my new Vantec ion 2+ 600 watt psu for R659 at matrix (which is epic by the way, i didn't even know it was on as it was so silent so i am never buying a generic psu again, if you need an excellent 600 watt psu on a budget nothing beats it.) in preparation for getting my xfx ati radeon hd 4890 at the PCZONE sale. I was testing out the psu on my mobo an m2n-sli deluxe (not m2n32-sli deluxe) and everything was working perfect untill i tried to connect the psu fan controller to the mobo which had three connectors (or metal thingies sticking up) and the psu controller had four connectors. When i switched the PC on the place where the connectors are started smoking so i switched it off and figured it was plugged in wrong(no ****!). The psu is fine but the mobo seems buggered (obviously) the thing is though that only the cpu fan seems to be inoperable but the mobo light is still coming on and power is still coming to the usbs. As the mobo has no on board vga i cannot tell whether the cpu and ram are fried. If anyone can help me with the following info pls:
1. I have the mobo box still but no warranty flyer (don't think it came with one) so will it still be under warranty?
2. Does Asus cover things like this in their warranty?- If so will it be replaced/fixed here or sent overseas.
3. Do you think the cpu and ram are fried too?
4. Do you think the PC gremlins will lock me up for being such a dumba$$
5. is it possible that the fan controller part of the mobo only broke

I know I screwed up and curiosity got the better me but help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance:D

1. If it's under 2 years it SHOULD be under warranty
2. ASUS shouldn't have a problem replacing a blown motherboard if it's tested by them or the suppliers.
3. It's a possibility
4. I think you're safe... for now.
5. Um... Highly improbable

Did you guys have that game when you little? You know the one... you fit round shapes into round holes or square shapes in square holes. :D

It looks like you shorted something out. I'd send it in to see what they figure. Just tell them it's just not coming on anymore and see if they can either figure it out or will replace it.

Just dont tell them what happened, they will repair it for if under warranty.

No worries, real experiences are built from failures :D

everything was working perfect untill i tried to connect the psu fan controller to the mobo which had three connectors (or metal thingies sticking up) and the psu controller had four connectors.

I don't know this power supply or the MOBO, but are you sure the MOBO requires external power for the fans??? Are you sure you did not plug the floppy connector into the fan output?

................everything was working perfect untill i tried to connect the psu fan controller to the mobo which had three connectors (or metal thingies sticking up) and the psu controller had four connectors.

Yep, you blew it! The three pin fan connector is basically a 12V(+) red wire, GND(-) Black wire and Speed feedback (pulses) Yellow wire, where the fourth pin connector is basically an additional fan speed speed control wire. For proper use you need to plug it in a four pin header but it should also spin to max speed only on a three pin header if correctly offset to the correct side. By inserting the four pin connector of the PSU in a three pin header on the Mobo circuit board you probably offset it to the wrong pin side and thus blew the fan controller chip and/or wires. What i do not understand is that you say the CPU fan now died? Thus I presume the 12V/GND track of the Fan supply got burned (smoke!) thus interupting the 12V feeding the CPU fan also. Thus asumimg that is the case then obviously the CPU will not boot untill the CPU fan is on speed. Thus if the board is not under warrantee then I would establish the CPU fan's 12V supply and GND pinouts and if the measured voltage on these pins is gone then give the CPU fan a alternate 12V or/and Ground supply/wires to make it spin up and see what happens. Maybe just maybe you are lucky!

Thanks pplz do you know if i need a receipt or any thing for the mobo when sending it back as I only have the mobo and its box which states a three year warranty.

Sorry i'm capped so had figure this with no google or asus it appears as their local site isn't local.

Just out of curiosity how do they repair a broken mobo?

Where you going to send it too? The serial should be stored by the disti that supplied it and should therefore be traceable. Just don't mention what you did - play dumb and say that it just stopped working :)

Axiz was the supplier.

Can they actually fix the blown motherboard or will they replace it?

If cpu is indeed blown you think it's also under warranty? -it's an amd 6000+

Probably just replace it. The CPU should also be under warranty. Just don't bring them in together; the person processing the return may put two and two together and realise that it was not a factory fault....

Just got off phone with Asus tech support they say they i will have to send it in and they will probably send a replacement.:D

The mobo is pretty old, think if they don't have stock they will send a better one i.e: Asus m2n32-sli deluxe?

edit- phoned asus again they say that they don't cover burn marks on warranty will have to pay a fee to fix it

When i connect the two broken metal thingies it starts to work!!

You Voided the warranty when you plugged it in wrong and it started smoking :) If you lucky it will be replaced; if not just short the two wires....

In that case is there any special computer solderer or something?

thanks will probably get my pc technician to fix it as i am not the best with soldering
