Goodbye Nokia

sad to see this day for Nokia.

It is not the end, apparently Nokia will be able to start using the brand again in a year or two.
If they are still producing at that point and they go android then they will make a killing.

Can Nokia's mobile division take such a knock being absent for a couple of years?

That remains to be seen, their technical people have been moved over to Microsoft so either they would need new ones or to lure the old ones back first.
The brand has always been strong but their decision to go with MS rather than android a few years back cost them heavily.

I wonder what the new name will be? I hope it is something short and sweet.

It is really sad to see Nokia vanishing...never forget the classic Nokia 5110 and the Nokia 3310....my first Nokia was the Nokia 6310i (it had Bluetooth and internet....and that was a big thing back then...lol).

Nokia....you will never be forgotten!!

Oh, I hope this happens. Then perhaps this time they will make use of all (or most) OS available :)

I recall owning a Nokia Communicator. It was a real brick, but it was epic. Everyone was in awe when I flashed it around. Probably the first real smartphone. How they managed to drop the ball from then will probably become a case study at business school.

IBM's legendary cock-up with MS-DOS OS for the IBM PC is probably now second to Nokia's downfall.

for sure this is the type of corporate stumble that is rich case study material

sad really. they were undisputed masters at some point.

It reminds me of the ANC. Wherever they start renaming stuff, you can be sure it is to sugar coat a big cock-up.

Sorry Nokia. Assimilation is inevitable. Resistance is futile.

Judging by their past it will be something like "Microsoft Handheld Bing Device 2014 Professional Powered by Windows including Microsoft Office 365 R2"

I had a good chuckle :-p Added the obligatory year and release etc for you :-p

Bye Nokia, and thank you for all the memories!

PS: I still have my Nokia 100!!

I also hear that the phones will no longer have ringtones, but rather Bingtones.

Bing, bing. Bing, bing...

Seriously, anything with Bing is a massive turn off.

Aye, lad. My N73 is still one of the best i have owned or used. Probably 8 years old and remains solid as ever.

I hope they have an Android backup plan, because that will win me back.

Well I hope MS does a good job with this because I'd hate to go back to Android :(

Two flavours of the same phone model - one running that bingely OS, and the other running a true Android (not the neutered droids they've got now) version. Think this will be a good thing to have.

Sure, it'll mean they will have to support both win and android, but from a business perspective - if they can shift their phones and make money then it'll be good for them.
