Google CEO quits Apple board

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt is resigning from the board of Apple due to "potential conflicts" as the two tech giants compete in certain areas, Apple announced on Monday.

Probably because of the voice portion more than the OS, read here: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Cellular/9045.html

That's my guess. I'm sure Google's got a few more tricks up their sleeve. They have been pretty shrewd with timing. Battleships has started with Google firing salvos at MS and Apple first. Let's see if the juggernauts have anything new to fire back with or if they end up playing catch up...

Looks like the iFight over Google Voice on the iPhone is what's causing the iSplit. I for one am very iHappy.

It's definitely Google Voice that has tipped the scale. Next director to go looks like Alan Leverson, also a member on both Google & Apple boards.

I doubt it. It was more likely brought forward by the FTC investigation.

It makes sense though as Google are moving into more markets in competition with Apple by the day.

No that was the FCC.

The FTC is more interested in possible antitrust violations.

Yes you are right, but I dont think the timing of Schmidt's departure is a coincidence.

Since AT&T & Apple copping the heat for blocking Google Voice. Schmidt has been squeeezed.

Steve Jobs' statement yesterday
"as Google enters more of Apple's core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric's effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest."

Google Voice, I think is by far the biggest conflict of interest on the table right now (Steve Jobs doing his trademark "hush hush"), and like I said, it's what has tipped the scales.

Being that the FTC is still continuing the anti-trust investingation, their eyes are firmly on Alan Leverson to make up his mind - Google or Apple?

If the Google Voice debacle didn't happen, Schmidt and Leverson would have had more time to make up their mind.

This would also explain why the "conflict of interest" issue would have extra weight.
Interesting theory, although doesn't entirely make sense.

Google Voice is free VOIP service (for national calls). Mobile Me is an expensive Data Integration service that has been ailing since its conception as iTools in 2000.

If Apple were to compete with its own VOIP service, connecting it to Mobile Me, would assure its failure.

Providing a free service, would be a first for Apple too.
