Google Chromecast unveiled: cheap, versatile content streaming device

And it seems like the latest news is you can't actually stream from phone to the TV.
Chromecast isn't a mirroring technology, but rather one that does content address handover.

So if you're watching a YouTube vid on your phone, when you hit cast it sends a message (with the address/position) to the dongle and tells it to start streaming the content itself (direct from YouTube). Same principal for a Netflix movie or web page.

Funny. The one demo looked a lot like it was showing a game being played on the handset on the TV.
I'll wait untill the hype is over.
One thing worries me - the android sticks are notorious for bad wifi. What is this one like?

Probably a video of it, according to the event only 4 handover applications are initially supported;

Youtube
Netflix
Pandora
Chrome (beta) webpage tab

Can this mirror an Android device's screen onto the TV?
/if not then meh
Why would people want this or at least you? Your phone is then not free to do with as you please or even leave. With this your phone just initiates the content like a remote there after the phone can even leave the house or take calls.

Why would you want your phone permanently connected and screen on for that matter + wifi streaming draining the battery in 30-60min max

Just mirror an android screen like this Samsung device... (basically HDMI over wifi).

I want to be able to hold the phone but see the screen on the TV via wifi. Could be a fun way to play games like NFS (phone would act like a controller).

Miracast? Don't think so. But perhaps a future update can address this.

What? With chrome cast if my wife uses her phone to put on Hanna Montana for the kids then goes to the kitchen to cook while displaying a recipe on her phone she can. It just makes more sense! Would you prefer Hanna Montana to stream from her phone being mirrored on TV that means the phone needs to be stuck doing that and probably on charge as well the whole time and when a call comes in Hanna Montana stops playing and her irritating friend's fat face displays on the TV and my wife has to run from the kitchen then pickup this phone while its on charge as well. What a silly system that is.

btw let's just assume the fat faced friend is hypothetical for now...

Why would people want this
Because its vaguely useful/entertaining at only $35, for instance showing a group of people your fav YouTube vid.

Have used it on occasion myself, this dongle is not the first iteration of this technology. The YouTube app on SmartTV's (like my Samsungs) has had this functionality for some time (initiated from IOS or Android app).

I WANT THIS!!! My question was why would people want mirroring
Chromecast the way it is is freaking gold man!

Not always for streaming video, I can already do that with my TV via built in DLNA -no extra devices needed (and no fat friends popping up :D).

What I can not do without an extra device is: use my TV as the screen for the applications on the phone via wifi.

I am thinking of games as a potential use case. But there should be more, we are starting to see more and more mini android computers connected via HDMI. Why not have the android mini pc in your pocket (connected to your tv via wifi)?

No sure for games its great. I cant see why this device can't do both... maybe in the future
Most ppl don't have smartTV's so for those of us who have regular TV's this is great!
