So I was having a look at this device and it seems quite nice. I was wondering what the support is like for it (eg: Netflix not available in SA) here... So with this in mind, does it seem to be something that can be found useful in SA? What would be advantageous in buying one of these instead of a dedicated media player (other than price as it seems that you can't really use the chromecast without a PC or smartphone)?

I have one and a Roku 3.

Roku 3 is by far the better option for Netflix and the like.
Only nice thing with the Chromecast is the ability to cast tabs from Chrome to your TV and the Youtube app from your cellphone is also nice.

I tested Chromecast, but had some issues with a Netgear router and an LG TV. It worked intermittently, but was just too buggy to use as a primary streaming device.

Not very useful in this country if you don't use a DNS service like Unotelly. Just be warned, the Chromecast has hardcoded DNS servers and you cannot change them so if you want to use your own DNS servers you have to redirect the DNS traffic to the Chromecast using your router (it may not be very easy to do so, depending on what router you have).

Check here for a router compatibility chart as well as workarounds for problem routers: https://support.google.com/chromecast/table/3477832?hl=en&ref_topic=3447927

Got mine is yesterday and I made the error of allowing it to automatically updated firmware to latest version which cannot be rooted. Otherwise I could have rooted it and modified the DNS and get my Netflix through it. So i am only using it for YouTube, which is somewhat redundant since there is a YouTube app on my Roke 3.

rpm I had issues with two different D-Link DAP-1360 APs on the same network and SSID as a DAP-1522. Worked perfectly with the 1522 but very patchy with the 1360s.

Eventually through way-too-much googling, I found that it was the channel that the 1360s were using. The Chromecast can apparently only work up to a particular frequency, so by lowering the WiFi channel on the 1360s, the problem was solved.

Could that have been similar to the issue with the Netgear?
