If google were to release something like this do you think it could really make a difference in the south african context? WhatsApp is very popular for non bbm users in RSA and would something like this be able to make people change? If it was cross platform and proved to be as reliable as bbm it might.

Not another dam imessage... cant we get something that is cross platform.

Well hopefully once all the platforms have a built in IM they will cross platform them or cross contact them.

There are just too many people using different devices. My friends are pretty much all iPhone and bb users. That won't change in the next few years. Now if Google could develop a stable "Whatsapp", that would be awesome! They could even include android and chrome advertising in non android devices. Lol!!!

depends on what kind of difference you expect.
If
a. Get more people onto android, not really. The main obstacle is data costs. BIS is perfect for SA (I may be totally wrong tho, all i hear from the average BB user is "BBM, BBM, BBM!"; they don't really take advantage of the internet so data costs might not be such a big thing to them).
b. Easing the change from BB to other smartphones, definitely.

meant will it be able to take over from whatsApp who is the current popular cross-platform IM

If Google could buy whatsapp and incorporate it into gtalk then we would really have a winner.

Most importantly it must be platform agnostic.

Well, thing is, BB is a "phase"... Black berry phones are unbelievably limited now, and people are more looking at iphones...

Nokia is still a big player in SA (nostalgia?), but people are using cross platform IM, having BBM is amazing, if your friends have BBM too, otherwise, people just move to Whatsapp because they realize that there's a bigger user base... no need for that horse-shyte bar code, and it's pretty stable..... It does have it's down times, I know all to well, but it's something that will reach a peak, then get better as Whatsapp servers increase in size and the growth of the app starts to decrease.
