Google Docs the default office suite for Ubuntu?

Makes sense. A netbook has to be light on the installation size and is supposed to have net access so Google Docs is the way to go.

what could they be including - its an online suite of applications ???.

For those thinking this will only beavailable to online users, google docs, like mostl other google tools, do have offline options available....

I definitely favour abiword. In my experience, it is fast and does just about everything I want for a word processor. It offers all the advantages of Google Docs with more functionality.

Out of interest, has anyone tried AbiCollab? How well does it work?

Kinda of a FAIL for SA, because of your internet

I have to say, Google Docs/Google mail is actually getting picked up quite heavily in South Africa and used with a fair bit of success. I know of at least one university that has migrated their entire student base to Google Docs/Google mail which enables them to give their students much larger mail quotas and reduces the complexity of running each systems in house.

I don't think this would be a bad move at all, the stuff works, and holding your docs and mail on a platform as redundant as Google's leaves you far less risk of losing data in the event of something happening to your netbook/pc/whatever.

Just my opinions as always

Oh ok interesting

gears. that's the offline browser caching component.
i can't remember if it comes standard with chrome.
maybe that's what they mean when they say it's included in the os.
open office doesn't just use disk space, it also chugs processor and memory.
@tassidar - an os maker that listens to its users - now there's a new idea...

They say one of the reasons are space on the screen...
Google docs with default Firefox also uses a relative amount of space on the screen. I modified the look on my firefox because of that very reason, giving me more space on my browser and I'm on a normal notebook.
However, I like google docs, but I think SA is still far away from using it as an alternative to other office suites.

I don't really know why people care so much about what comes with a default install - simple enough just to install the OpenOffice.org package later down the line using Synaptic/apt-get/aptitude (and, from a local mirror!)
