Google Duplex will identify itself to humans

Google’s Duplex voice technology will identify itself as an AI assistant when speaking to humans, CNET reported.

Duplex will be used with the Google Assistant to improve the AI’s voice technology, making it sound like a human speaker.

It's a bit unnerving to say the least

Interesting the little pauses in speech, the uhms, ahs and inflections of uncertainty.

In order for the AI to converse it needs to be connected to Google servers?
Yes, is your phone powerful enough to run a Google Duplex cluster? (hint: it's not)...which is the reason for my question above :p

oh, yes, going to be very hard to distinguish people and robots over the phone now.
I'd actually love a modified version of this that does NOT ideantify itself as a bot. I hate talking on the phone, especially if I'm busy. It should just send me a transcript of the convo once it's done with the call so that I can confirm it didn't talk kuk.

The only part of the demo I didn't like were those intentional disfluencies. It's one thing to create an AI assistant that has an uncanny valley level of speech, but to me it's a whole different thing to intentionally deceive humans that they're speaking to an AI.

What's the point? I feel like Google would have received far more positive news coverage of Duplex if the start of each call was simply "Hi, I'm an AI assistant and I'd like to book a haircut/table for a client". And without the disfluencies. The bit in the video where the crowd laughs at the mm-mmm could have just been a brief thank you.

I don't think that Duplex will be ready for the public any time soon though.

The benefits of AI not identifying itself are obvious, such as not being hanged up on. But the downfalls are considerable, such as the technology finding its way to telemarketing companies or trolls. On the balance of considerations, I think AI callers should identify themselves.
