Google announces fibre project to help bring Ugandans online; Project Link to help ISPs and mobile operators bring broadband Internet access to Kampala

From a quick Google search, reports seem to show that Uganda has lower broadband penetration than SA. Coupled with the fact that their economy is booming compared to ours, I guess Google decided that it would make a better longterm investment.

We already have fibre here.
Uganda has almost no high speed internet for businesses. Uganda needs this far more than we do

+1 To Google on this effort.

What I was keen on knowing was the costs involved - couldn't fathom that it'd be a free initiative and some googling on the web finally gave a bit of insight into it.

The project is still a business initiative though: Google will charge operators to hook into its network, which it says will allow the project to keep growing. "We want this to be a sustainable model that can grow to reach the most people," a Google spokesperson tells The Verge in an email. "To do that, we are taking a business approach and making the network available to any and all mobile operators or ISPs in the region who want to sign on as customers."

Can't yet find any details on what the cost of leasing or connecting to their network is just yet.

Wonder how much fibre (in kms) they've done and how long it took them?
This then basically seems like a Dark Fibre initiative, like DFA locally.

True true, I assumed it would be similar to the service they offer in the US, if it's a dark fibre type network Uganda deserves it more.
It would be welcomed by me if it was the type of service the offered in the US, affordable FTTx
