I use google mail for exactly that purpose.

And I've added the dates of my vehicles' licenses to Google Calendar - so as to be reminded when they have to be replaced.

And it's free, no fee required.

yeah and with them launching gear I think it was so that you can work with your web based mail offline..... what is next that Google is going to bring out?

There is a little gem in Google Calendar
Set up any calender to SMS you a reminder - you specify how long before the event

I have been using this on my Vodacom phone for about a year now - all Birthday and other daily reminders every day on my phone
