Hi Guys,

Have any of you purchased the google home or amazon dot? Does it have support in SA?

I have played with both.
The google home is better in my opinion.
The music works well and the location is good.

I have an Echo Dot, works very well.

I use it to control some TP-Link Smartplugs, play music, etc, etc.

Speaker a bit small, so have an Echo Plus on order.

And what's the range? Would I need to talk into it like a mic for it to pick up? Also what's the support like in SA? Compatible with TVs etc available on SA?

BF has an Echo Dot. It's pretty awesome. Would love one myself. Apparently at work it's a bit awkward if they use one, since his name is Alex

Where you ordering yours from? Amazon doesn't ship them here...Unless you are using a forwarding company.

Keen to get the dot or the echo.

They're pretty cool.

I have two of them and I've connected my house with Sonoff relays/smartplugs (Disclaimer : we do sell those and although not punting me specifically, they really are awesome devices).

Nice thing is grouping the whole house and switching off the house on a single command 'Alexa, Turn house off'

I'm also getting RGB bulbs soon to dim and change colour etc via the Dot.

Other than the lighting, I use use Spotify (Bluetooth to my hifi) and often add shopping lists. I set alarms and sleep timers too.

Although I don't use it, they can be used as an intercom if you have a double storey or playroom, Wiki, quiz, jokes and random facts

As it doesn't know where you are, you can't ask it things like nearby restaurants or get an Uber

I get mine from Amazon.de and use a forwarding company.

First problem is to get it to speak English, and not German :D

I also have the remote for longer distance.

Oldish thread I know.
Does the Echo Dot feature to read Kindle books out loud for you work in SA?
Also though I won't get this for its audio quality, does Apple music work on it if I have a SA account?

How do you download the app for the echo dot?

The Bluetooth on the Google Mini could be off-putting for many.

As far as I am aware you need a US account to operate the Echo due to the fact that Alexa App can only be downloaded from USA App / Google Play store.

Anyone got the android app?
couldn't even find it on apk mirror :-(

Go here : https://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/get/android/ref=get_appstore?ie=UTF8&appName=appstore&ref_=mas_sms_dl

Download the APK and install (from official Amazon, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned).

Once installed, you've got access to Alexa and Spotify and a few other region locked apps :)

On another note - I have Dots and a Google Mini, trying them out to which is better. So far, much prefer the grouping of things like lights on the Amazon. But prefer the sound (much) of the Mini and the compatibility of local business, Google Music, traffic etc
