Android 3.1 updates

  • Support for camera's so you can upload photo's directly to the tablets using USB.
  • Controller Support like being able to Plug in Xbox 360 Controller to your tablet and play games this also includes the normal keyboard and mouse support.
  • Scalable Widgets so you can make them full screen.
  • New Movie Application to access the Movie rentals from Android Market (Dont think we will get this in SA)
  • Task manager now scales

I just browsed Engadget for all the updates and so happy that Honeycomb 3.1 will be one OS for tablets, phones and TVs.

Most impressive that 100 million Android phones have been activated in 2011. Scary stuff.

Android @ Home

This is the tech that I would say most people would love. Its almost like airplay from iOS but on steroids.

It will allow your Android to discover new Android@Home devices and give you the ability to control them. Think of it as plug and play for your house. The thing is that its not only WiFi devices like your PC or new TV but simple things like Lights. They created a new low cost method that when included into the manufacture of products will give your tablet/phone the ability to access them.

Example they have Lighting companies that is building the Tech directly into the lights, so no need to rewire the house to be able to use this, its as simple as changing a light bulb as for new HiFi's TV's and even Microwaves that will come out this could become a game changer.

Yep that is a crap load of phones a day

Personally I am more excited with the Android@home stuff, and maybe the fact that I can use a Xbox controller to play my Android games that's on my tablet on my TV. Or the fact that with the new Android@Home I can select a song on my phone and let it play on my HiFi and if I leave the room the music follow me to the next room by letting the song continue on the radio in the next room.

Bleh. Wouldn't be so bad if the toys didn't get better each year. How do I get an invite?

Come GoogleSA , where's the love , where's a give away comp like the IPad 2 ....

3.1 has been long overdue, i say! and the @home stuff sounds pretty gnarly, will be a cool party trick

just to go off topic a little bit concerning content delivery outside of the USA.

there is alot of red tape around this to prevent such things from (legally) happening. the big networks in the USA rely on reselling thier product licenses to Dish networks like DSTV for some extra income, letting the whole world have easy access to content will breach these legal licenses, eg having Netflix in SA would be illegal in the sense that it is not delivered by a local licensee like DSTV. what I'm saying might not be 100% correct but i know that this is the case, which is why DSTV need to just give us a decent on demand content delivery service

back on topic though, would love to get my hands on one of those ADKs :)

Darn! Now I wish I had USB input on my Galaxy 10.1v....I will get over it

Exciting stuff. Such a shame that Music and Movies services are US-only :(

I am wondering about that, as there is 2 parts to the music system

1 part is that you can upload your music to the cloud for streaming, this will also give you access to the free music

I dont think we will have access to the purchasing section to buy new music from Google, but if someone like Pick&Pay online partners with Google we would be able to buy music from Pick&Pay and access it via the Google Service.

The uploading pictures to my tablet was the main reason I ordered something with USB, but I must admit the game controller is making me smile from ear to ear as I am glad I didnt settle for a Eye-fi solution with an SD card.
