Google Maps Navigation

Thanks - works a treat - maybe being a bit doff here but how do I ensure automatic up date is turned off?

sigh, when will Google be able to give us RSA navigation without hacks etc... Oh well, luckily I invested in a Garmin way before I had an android..

Market -> My Apps -> Google Maps.

Comes up indicating Google Maps as "Free" rather than installed - I assume that's the right status ? Cant imagine it auto updating if it doesn't think it is installed. Played with the street view navigation on the way home - Wow very very cleaver and effective. Almost wants to make me move to somewhere complicated like Jo-burg (not much call for navigation in Port Elizabeth).

Well sometimes (December) you would try and find the most offbeat road to get from point A to B as them Vallies come fill up our 1 road that runs the length of the city :)

The market got here. Here's hoping navigation follows.

It really is a much more powerful navigation software than anything from the traditional navigation companies. The integration with all things google and android is unbeatable.

That's exactly what makes me want it so much :(

The voice nav is pretty terrible though, barely understandable at times. Premium GPS software and devices still beats it in my opinion.

Nokia Ovi Maps on my Nokia 5800 became pretty good for navigation after enough updates, the way it pronounced road names was very clear (although the way it pronounces African names can make you laugh). As a GPS device it owns my Samsung Galaxy S.

lolz.

I dont really care that my GPS pronounces O'Brien Avenue as "Oh Brine ohv" lol. As long as the biets tells me in time to gooi a shot left im sorted. :-)

What really annoys me about google maps is that it says Avenue as "Ave" sounding like Avay. Why can't they just say Avenue. And the Afrikaans names are horrible.

I dont want it to read street names, turn left, turn right, I pity tha fool and make a U-turn are good enough for me :P Just as long as it can route my destination, turn by turn guide me and do all this without constant internet coverage...

They will probably catch up, its just so annoying sometimes that we get left behind in the development phase, Oh, South Africa... they dont need navigation. They navigate by the signposts that show you were the nearest stadium is... :P

Reading streetnames is very helpful when you have multiple intersections nearby. I just found the voice nav on my Nokia much clearer and better overall compared to Google Nav. And the fact that it works properly even when the internet cuts out...

There's a free app called MapQuest:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mapquest.android.ace&feature=search_result

I think it's relatively new, haven't tried it yet.

The voice nav is a simple text to speech engine, hence the issues with street names etc. Still it's not an issue for me since the map is super clear, and turn left and turn right are too.

I like that I only need to know the partial address or even just the name of the business.

I've used co pilot, and garmin on my phone. Their days are numbered....

i just wish the navigation would give you a warning say 500m before an off ramp etc. generally i still find it very good.

There are rumours flying around that Google Maps will offer full offline functionality sometime (very) soon. If that does happen, I wouldn't want to be in possession of any Garmin or TomTom shares!

It already caches saved routes, If you read international comments you will see Android users in US have started ditching their Garmins and Tom Toms some time ago :)

I just wish they would just open it normally so I dont have to root and install it manually. Its been proven to work so whats the hold up.

I know about the caching function, but it'll still be of little use on the wrong side of Kuruman! With regards to local availability I'd hazard that it's probably a licensing issue of some sort.

As for rooting... just do it. :p I'm already running most of the HTC Sensation's goodies on my ancient Desire.

I have a Desire that is rooted so using it on that, as for my DHD I'll keep it stock and unrooted till its out of warranty.

Simple question about Brut maps. My when I navigate, the marker for the car doesn't stay in the middle of the map. Then I have to scroll to where I want to be in a minutes time etc. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Edit: Sorry I used show on map not navigate. Navigate does what I wanted it to do. I really should just read all the stuff. :/
