Hi All

Someone at work got one, and my interest has been piqued. Think I might put in on my Christmas wishlist with some smart plugs, but thought I'd see what people in SA are using it for?

Thanks!

I use mine to listen to the radio in the morning... "hey google, play hot 91.9fm on tune-in"

That's about all i do with it, but you can check traffic routes, weather, stocks etc and also control my MiBox (built in chromecast) with it.

I planned to get smart lights for it but they a bit pricey still.

I have 3 ... one in my bedroom, one in the kitchen, another to be put up in my braai area. Listen to music, switch my TV / nVidia Shield and various lights around the house connected to sonoff wifi switches.

Do you think that it will get cheaper any time soon? My concern is that technology generally moves on before something gets cheaper, but then it is pretty much outdated. Hence my question, I think in a way I want to decide whether it is worthwhile investing in it right now, or treat as a novelty and use it as such

LOL, sounds like you have embraced it properly. The sonoff switches seem a little pricey compared to some of the others I have seen online - any value-add to them?

I bought 10 sonoff basic switches for about R100ea. Still need to put up most of them...

I doubt they'll get much cheaper... but there were some good deals for black Friday/cyber Monday for about R700.
GeeWiz has them for R900 now. you must just shop around.
I think the idea is to have a few around the house and then add smart things as you go.
Being Google i wouldnt worry too much about it being outdated tech... they are pretty good at updates etc and backwards compatibility.
Check GearBest for smart bulbs/switches etc... you can get them for about R150 each.

Which others are cheaper ?

I think the Sonoff are probably the cheapest you're going to get.

I have both an Alexa and the Google. I don't even think the Google is plugged in :/ but I use the Alexa for my Sonoff switches, switch on/off my TV, morning alarm and (as stupid as this sounds) I check the time in the morning before work :)

Use mine for Netflix via Chrome cast, music on voice command via Google music and weather and news.
