The Nexus 7 8GB cost $299 a month ago
The Nexus 4 8GB costs $299 currently.

So if the Nexus 7 retailed for R3100 (approx. R500 markup at the time that it was selling for $299) in SA then you can understand why I'm not willing to pay R4k (R1300 markup) for a Nexus 4 8GB.

Ok i see your point but all hardware is like that in SA, at release date it's marked up. Then about 3 months down the line it starts dropping.

GS3 seems to be the exception though, price is nice and stable here

I just learned today that Carphone Warehouse in the UK has stock. £389 sim-free. That is £110 more than Google Play, and brings the total "imported by a friend" value to R5,500.

I have about a week longer than I can afford to wait for Google Play's stock. Any later and I cannot get the device to my friend in time before they head out to SA.

I'm not going to lie - I am tempted to just buy it right now and take the hit. R5,500 is still CHEAP by all accounts for the best phone on the market today. I want it badly enough that I'm prepared to pay the price.

I am hoping that my sanity prevails and I don't click "buy now". Logically, I should wait the week out before deciding, but I am petrified that CPW's stock runs dry too!

Jeez I haven't been this eager for a new toy in years!

If you can afford it and NEED it badly enough ;) then I say go for it.

One thing to consider though is that you're never going to get a decent amount of money back for it when it is time to move on in a year or whatevers time, and the market is saturated with second hand phones bought at the Play store price.

'My' phone was ordered on Monday apparently for delivery in the US today. So I'm hoping it's early to mid next week when I get it (for about R4,300 if you never saw my earlier post) :whistle:

I understand you've gotta make dosh and wade in on people's Xmas shopping fever, but nearly a 100% markup?
That'll have me waiting on Esquire - even if it's till January.

Yeah, R6,250 is kinda ripping the arse out of it.

Not sure I should really talk though... I just told my friend in London to go ahead and pick mine up from Carphone Warehouse. R5,500 is what its costing me (£390).

I'm out of options though. He's coming back to SA in a week and a half. Even if Google restocked on Monday, apparently shipping has been unreliable at best so I could miss out anyway.

R1,500 premium means at least I know I'm getting my phone in two weeks no matter what, and I have psyched myself up so much for this godd4mn phone, there's no way I'm NOT getting it!

Ah, heck - if he can get the deals done. Then all credit to him. Its just business.
If there are people whom are desperate enough and don't mind parting with cash and getting caught up in the fever - one cannot hold it against him.

I notice though - that he doesn't have any of those deals up here - cos we'd rip him and those prices to shreds in the thread.
On carbonite - no price discussions allowed :D - So he can get on with his day :)

There's enough demand - and he (afaik) seems to be one of the few people that can actually get his hands on them at the moment.

Commerce - love it or hate it :twisted: :D
