I dont think the prices will get lower than 5k because of shipping and stuff. Unless someone does 1 bulk order then the shipping costs can be distributed. I actually think that Nexus 4 had a chance in SA at those prices.. Oh well.

And technically, its not "fair" to compare retail prices with Esquire's prices, since they SUPPLY the retail chains.

Expansys isn't a normal retailer they (like wantitall) tend to import most of their stuff from the UK. Some of the stuff they stock is from local distributors but in this case I doubt it.

Thinking the Nexus 4 is going to keep selling for R5k+ is very naive.

The prices you are seeing on eBay and Amazon.com is for units that are IN STOCK and ready to ship.

Eg. those are companies that are charging a premium for someone who has more money than sense and wants a phone NOW.

The phone is selling for $299 (2588.74) on the US/UK/etc. Play store (8GB).

Tax on $299 at customs (in SA) would be R400.

Typically shipping is around R400-1000. Typically R500.

I've done this before, many times. Electronics do not attract any fee other than VAT. (Can't wait for someone to contradict me on this because they haven't done this before or got duped).

So unless Equire and the other sellers bought on eBay.com or Amazon.com, they are making serious moola from these sales.

Prices are down on eBay and Amazon already (I can already get a phone for R4500 incl. shipping)

So yeah, it is more than fair IMHO to compare Esquire and everyone's prices at this point, they are all making massive profit.

It's never fair to compare local retail prices with local supplier prices. You're taking it to a whole other level and comparing international prices with local ones.

If your point is that the cheapest place you can get the phone from is Google Play, then I don't think anyone would argue. They sell it for a far lower margin than any other retailer will.

Yeah, Lets look at the iPad/Nexus 7 for example. Local prices are really similar to the international pricing. However when we look at the iPhone and iMac ranges the prices are a bit higher than the international prices, high enough to matter. I know Apple/Core is a bad example but this happens with graphics cards, SSDs and other electronics too.

On a side note, I realised that I will have to cut my sim into a microsim. I found this. My friend used this when he got his Lumia and it worked fine, I would just like to know how risky this is? How much is a microsim (im on MTN at the moment) do MTN cut the sim for free? tx

I walked into MTN the other day to enquire about this. I was told that they can cut it to a MicroSIM *if* you have the right kind of SIM. The older SIMs have a large chip on it, in which case you need to get a new one. Sorry, but I cannot remember the exact price she quoted, but I think it was about R140.

They cut my wife's SIM at MTN Pavillion (Durban), so I am guessing I'll have no issues myself.

Today is going to be a LOOONG day! I'm collecting my phone this evening! When do you expect yours, CrazYmonkeY159 ?

This evening too however the Esquire sales rep said that he would let me know when I can come pick it up. Maybe today maybe early tomorrow, also I hope my boss doesn't mind me ducking out during the day, but hes a phone fundie too so maybe he'll be chilled about it. *fingers crossed*
