Google Nexus 5

The specs are much the same so there is not really much between the two. The Nexus will continue getting new firmware updates after people have forgotten about the S4. The Nexus looks a lot better and it feels so much better than the S4. People eye Nexus and ask about the unfamiliar phone. No one cares about asking about yet another Samsung - the last time that happened was with the S and S2. The main reason is personal choice. It's like test driving cars - some are so so and others just feel so much better. To me the Nexus falls into the latter category. I often catch myself with this deep sense of satisfaction when I operate this phone... dare I say more so than my S2... And if you know me from the S2 thread, you world quickly find how much I loved playing with that phone and the amount of respect I have for the S2 and Samsung for making it.

Fair enough. It's good that you like your phone.

Personally, I'd take the S4. Cyanogenmod makes Samsung firmware updates irrelevant and the user experience similar to Nexus, and the poor battery and camera in the Nexus 5 is a big deterrent for me.

Do you have the Snapdragon i9505 model? I would love to switch to Cyanogenmod, but it sounds like there are some major issues with the rom for the i9500.

I have an S3 - I was merely saying that I'd prefer an S4 over a Nexus 5. Quite a few of my friends have S4's though and most are running custom firmware.

If your friends have the international i9500, they are probably using firmwares based on stock, as those are super stable. But Cyanogenmod for the i9500 is not an option at all, as far as I can tell. It's a different story for those with the LTE i9505, however.

There must surely be other AOKP ROM's that work on the i9505?

Edit: just did a quick Google search and it seems CM supports the i9505 just fine? Maybe the issues were just at the start.

Precisely, there are many AOSP based ROM' that work perfectly well for the i9505. But the large majority of South Africans with the S4 have the i9500, for which stock-based ROM's are the only stable alternative to stock. It's a major challenge to get AOSP to play along with the Exynos chipset as the support from Samsung is limited, it seems. Hence, you'll see that AOKP does not support the i9500.

Sorry for the off topic posts, I'll stop now.

You reckon? 99.99% people around will look at you and say "Watse vryffoon is daai?" regardless of manufacturer.

FWIW, to me the kitkat goth look is unbelievably ugly.

Was out having lunch at rand airport with the family today. Was taking some pics and suffered the most insane frustration with the camera. The images were coming out so dark. If I moved the phone ever so slightly I could get a brighter image but had to keep doing this. I have never experienced such a bad cell camera - ever.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a trick to getting good - bright - images?
Using the Google camera and running 4.4.2.

Not tested video yet.
