Google Nexus 5

Thanks. I'm quite excited. Gonna be a bit of an upgrade from my S3 mini.

Is the battery life still as meh as it was at launch?

I never had an issue with battery life, ever. Could easily last 1-2 days with moderate use, and even when it ran out, it charges really quickly.

ART will only improve that further.

That's good news. Reviews showed about 12 hours with moderate usage.

If I'm gonna have a late night I struggled to make it through. Will need to have a midday charge. Normally 2 hours screen time.
But a mate of mine who doesn't have Facebook gets 2 days consistently. I'm running ART btw.

The Facebook app is horrible.

Well I guess my Nexus 5 will need to last another year. While the 6 looks awesome, it's just too big.
I want a Nexus 6 Compact.

Indeed, price has matched the size too, but I must say I love the specs of it. Eager to try this new size out too seems like this is where the craze is going.

Would have been cool with some multitasking features in Lollipop but maybe later on..

Nexus 6 will defiantly be on my next device list when Orange Stocks it.

Well it looks great, I personally love the design and size, although many people don't. Impressive specs too. But $649? Nope.

They have beefed up the specs, battery and camera, the two main downsides to the N5, which is probably the reason for this increase. The aluminium shell probably also added to that.

I'm not saying it's overpriced, on the contrary it's the same as most other flagships, but it's too much for me :o

Well, to be fair, we benefitted from the reduced Nexus prices. The first three generations of the Nexus cost around the same figure.

I think that what Google have accepted is, that even if you offer a device with top-tier specs at mid to low-tier prices, people will still get something else on contract. Carriers in the US still hold far too much sway, and Apple works around this too. Google's attempt at disincentivising contracts hasn't worked for the past three years now- the Nexus 4 and 5 didn't sell enough, even though they were sold at cost.

Given that- I think that this device may make a comeback in South Africa, on contract ala Galaxy Nexus.

Sure, if it actually comes to SA on a contract, the price is irrelevant :)

But there are still some people that prefer it off contract and the whole selling point of the Nexus range was affordable stock Google. So now, still stock, but not so affordable :p Now it's just another Google Play Edition device.

But not enough to change the model and incentivise off-contract purchases. This is what Google wanted, and could never achieve. The iPhone dominates the US market because of the discounted contract prices. Likewise, the Samsung Galaxy range dominates Android sales globally for the very same reason.

Off-contract is an ideal situation- but when carriers make it less worthwhile and more costly on average to dump their contracts, people will go back to them because it's the cheapest way to get a phone while getting better value adds than prepaid.

I loved the cheap Nexus model, because I benefited from it. But this may benefit me more in the long term, by hopefully bringing the device in with adequate support on a local front.
