Google Nexus 7 tablet announced

Mmm. Wife off to USA in a few weeks. I will be abandoned and lonely. She will need to bring back prezzies to compensate. Will have to wind her into a sympathy buy. ;)

I can almost hear the millions of Android phones across the planet going "WTF I dont even have 4.0 yet!!!"

Personally I must say its the 1st time I am actually looking forward to an update.

lol they can actually talk and think hey #wink#

I wonder how Google's hardware partners are going to be feeling about the Nexus7. They've created a premium tablet with zero profit margin on the hardware, basically undercutting their own partners who are forced to add margins on the same devices. Samsung, Acer, et al will be puking guts out over this. How can you sell even a $250 tablet with lower specs?

Well that makes my decision easy, will get the Infinity instead :)

well given i would mostly be using it in areas without wifi access that makes it somewhat of an issue.

At that price you will be able to get both and just use the 7" as a reader and the infinity for whatever else.

Or you will be able to by a stand alone MiFi that you can leave running in your car and connect to it via wifi from the tablet.

To answer my own question from the last page about warranties: Asus devices have a worldwide warranty so importing it shouldn't be a problem. They have two repair centers in Cape Town.

As an End user, I can aptly go, F them. They had 2 years to come up with a decent product and still nothing? Apple is laughing at all the attempts all the way to the bank and the up and coming Surface is going to kill the 10" form factor anyway. In my view Google had no choice but to make this move.

Focus on a form factor that generates a market of its own (7" book) and make it attractive via price. If they did not do this Android as a tablet would have been dead come this time next year. At least this move breaths some air into it.

Rubin's quote implies no margin but it seems like they may actually be taking a loss on each unit at the current hardware prices.

One thing is for sure, Google is happy to continue burning money on their pet projects. It will be really interesting to see if it pays off for them in the long term.

It sounds to me more like they sold them a horse that wouldn't run, and then threw them off to make the horse run.

Most if not all of the complaints to date is hardware based, not software. So I dont see it the same way.

In my case, I have both the Eee Pad TF101 + keyboard and the original iPad. I prefer to use the Eee Pad purely because of the software but I have to admit I hate the build quality when I compare it to my iPad that is a year older, and cheaper. In simple terms it sucks donkey balls, nothing about horses in there. :)

And I can say the same for all the other crap that came after it, dont even get me started on Sumsung's lack of updates or the Acers bulky size.

This is the OEM's doing, nobody else.

3G tether

Don't u just tether it thru bluetooth with your phone to have 3G/HSDPA? That way its using less battery on the droid too..not sure has someone experience with this?

I do this all the time, but apparently some people do not like it(Extra drain on phone). I can understand their view, even if I do not share it.

That's not the case at all. How many Gingerbread tablets have we seen? Honeycomb was undercooked and it negatively affected the perception of the first batch of tablets - the Xooms and Galaxies. ICS was an improvement but they still aren't cutting the grade as far as tablet application support goes.

Well all that is OEM's fault yes. But do you think any of them can produce a decent tablet at the $200 price point? KF is as good as it got previously and that's not an OEM product. Only by completely eliminating the profit margin of the OEM's can you get anything close to that price level.

Mid September will see me holding the 16GB version. It may not be the best tablet out there, but what you get at that price...just wow.

This is what I do (not from the car though) . I just carry the mifi with the tablet.
